MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team built an early double-digit lead Saturday inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, however, the advantage did not last as Elgin Community College left with a 77-38 win in Region 4 play. Sophomore
Kayla Staveness and
Kaylee Anzalone enjoyed impressive days, with the former setting a new career-high for points and the latter recording her second consecutive double-double. The WolfPack still lead the all-time series with the Spartans by a 7-4 margin.
Staveness opened the game with a succesful and-1, and the two sophomores combined for three 3-pointers in the game's first six minutes and ten second as Madison College opened up a 17-7 lead. Unfortunately, Elgin Community College (5-9) closed the first quarter with an 8-0 run to make it 17-15. The offensive drought carried into the second quarter for the WolfPack, who did not score until a pair of Staveness free throws four minutes in to snap a 17-0 surge spanning both quarters. Staveness would go on to score all nine of the team's points in the second quarter, which ended with a 33-26 lead for the Spartans.
The third quarter completely belonged to Elgin Community College, as they outscored the Pack by a 20-1 margin. A successful jumper from Anzalone in the opening minute of the fourth quarter snapped a near 15-minute drought without a field goal for the home team.
Tazhia Aune and
Mirella Zielke combined to make three free throws during the fourth quarter to become the only players not named Staveness or Anzalone to score for Madison College.
Staveness, a former Rio HS athlete, surpassed her previous career-best of 22 points with 24 points on 4 of 12 shooting with two makes from beyond the arc. She made 14 of 15 free throw attempts to become the third player in program history to sink that many in a single game.
Anzalone also drained a pair of three-pointers as part of an 11-point, ten-rebound double-double to follow up her first-career double-double against the College of DuPage on Thursday. The 5'4" guard from Elkhorn, Wisconsin was 3 for 5 at the charity stripe and led the team with three assists.
Madison College score more than half of their points from the free throw line, knocking down 20 of 28 attempts.
