DUBUQUE, IOWA - Sophomore sharpshooter
Kayla Staveness had it going from long range Thursday night, scoring a career-best 31 points with six 3-pointers as part of a 100-45 loss to the Clarke University JV. Staveness becomes the first player to reach 30-plus points in a game since Aniah Williams accomplished the feat twice during the 2019-20 season. .
Staveness, a native of Rio, Wisconsin, had just one hit from beyond the arc in the first half, and went on to sink two in the third quarter and three more in the fourth. She finished 8 of 17 from the field and was also a perfect 9 for 9 at the free throw line. The 5'0" guard has canned two or more three-pointers in seven straight games, with her six makes falling one shy of the career-high seven made on November 14 against the College of Lake County.
Unfortunately, while the WolfPack finished with eight made three-pointers in the game, the Pride were even better, pouring in 18 triples. They made five in the opening quarter en route to a 21-8 lead, and the differential steadily grew throughout the second quarter to reach 46-18 at the half. A barrage of seven more third quarter 3s contributed to a 79-31 score before a more competitive fourth quarter saw Madison College convert four 3-pointers compared to three for Clarke.
Staveness also led the WolfPack with eight rebounds, while fellow sophomore
Kaylee Anzalone had nine points and a team-high five assists.Â
Freshman
Kialee Fox, who joined the team at semester after being a member of the Madison College women's soccer team in the fall, scored her first career points with a pair of interior baskets.
The loss comes in the first-ever meeting between Madison College and Clarke University, who won the 2023 NAIA national championship.
