ROCKFORD, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team found out what most of the rest of Region 4 has learned when they played Rock Valley College on Tuesday night, falling 93-38 on the road against the third-ranked team in the
NJCAA Division II Poll. The Golden Eagles, who remain undefeated on the season, pulled away early from the WolfPack and cruised to a win despite another 20-plus-point performance from sophomore
Kayla Staveness.
After second year guard
Kaylee Anzalone scored a layup to tie the game at 2-2 in the first 30 seconds of the game, Rock Valley College (20-0) put their foot on the gas and raced out to a 17-2 lead before Staveness drained her first three-pointer of her night with 5:18 remaining in the quarter. Another 13-0 surge pushed the differential to 25 before back-to-back buckets for Madison College. The WolfPack played very competitive basketball in the first five minutes of the second quarter, and with the differential still at 25, RVC closed the quarter on a 9-3 run to lead 52-21. Rock Valley College widened the gap throughout the second half with scoring runs of 12, 11, and eight before the final horn.
Staveness racked up 23 points, thanks in part to a perfect 11 for 11 showing at the free throw line, where she had made 22 consecutive attempts and is 39 for her last 42. The native of Rio, Wisconsin, also made two of her five field goals from beyond the arc, to go along with six rebounds and two steals.
Anzalone netted seven of her 11 points during the second quarter and also drained one 3-pointer. Freshman
Mirella Zielke reeled in a career-high nine rebounds and dished out team-best two assists.
The WolfPack have dropped 13 straight games to Rock Valley College, which now boasts a 29-18 edge in the all-time series. The teams will play again on February 15 at Madison College's
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium.
