Second year players lead the WolfPack on Sophomore Day

Sophomores score 28 of team's 34 points again Black Hawk

MADISON, WISC. - Following a pregame ceremony recognizing the extraordinary commitment of the three-member class of 2024 on Saturday, the trio of second year players took the floor and accounted for more than 80% of the team's offense in a 76-34 setback to Black Hawk College on Sophomore Day inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Kayla Staveness, Kaylee Anzalone, and Tazhia Aune were each celebrated prior to the opening tip.

The visiting Braves created some early separation in the Region 4 contest with a 10-0 run in the first quarter, which ended with an 18-4 differential. The offensive struggles continued throughout the second quarter, as Madison College made just 4 of 25 shots in the half and was 0 for 10 from long range. Black Hawk College (6-13) put together runs of 11 and 12 to own a 43-8 edge at halftime.

Madison College found its footing as the second half went on, scoring eight points in the third quarter and then winning the fourth quarter by an 18-12 margin. Kayla Staveness scored 12 points over the final ten minutes, including a pair of three-pointers.



Staveness, a Rio, Wisconsin, native, finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. The guard was a perfect 8 for 8 at the line, extending her streak of consecutive made free throws to 30, while also pushing her consecutive games with 20 or more points streak to four in a row.

Anzalone, a native of led the team with four assists and four steals, to go along with eight points and four rebounds. Aune, a former Madison College women's soccer player from Winona, Minnesota, tallied five boards and two steals.

Freshman Kialee Fox, a former Poynette HS athlete who also joined the team after playing soccer in the fall, matched a career-best with 11 rebounds, and also produced two assists and a steal.

The loss brings the all-time series with Black Hawk College to a 1-1 tally.

Madison College (1-18) the homestand continues Tuesday, January 23 with a Region 4 rematch with the College of DuPage (5-14) inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The Chaparrals defeated the WolfPack 56-22 back on January 4 in Illinois, whoever, Madison College still boasts a 28-17 lead in the all-time series.
