WolfPack drops home Region 4 contest to DuPage

Staveness continues scoring streak despite end to impressive free throw run

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team entered Tuesday's Region 4 matchup with hopes of avenging a loss from just 19 days prior, however, the College of DuPage finished off a regular season sweep with a 75-43 decision inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack were led by Kayla Staveness, who recorded her fifth consecutive game with 20 or more points despite seeing her run of 30 consecutive made free throws come to an end. The Pack, who have dropped 15 straight games this season, still leads the all-time series with the Chaparrals by a 28-18 margin.

The former conference rivals played a very competitive first quarter, where the College of DuPage (6-14) held a narrow lead even though four different WolfPack players were able to contribute points. Staveness, who had gone 1 for 2 at the free throw line following a foul at the 1:50 mark to end a streak of 30 consecutive makes, ended the quarter with three succesful hits from the charity stripe after being fouled on a shot behind the arc and closed the gap to 13-11. Both teams went cold in the second quarter, combining for just three points in the first five minutes. The cold stretch lasted longer for Madison College, who got a Staveness three-pointer with two minutes to play in the half to snap a 12-0 run for COD. That triple allowed the WolfPack to close the half scoring eight of the final 13 points to make it 30-19.

A 20-2 surge to start the third quarter busted the game wide open in favor of the visitors, and the Chaparrals outscored the Pack by a 24-8 margin. Staveness and fellow sophomore Tazhia Aune each buried a pair of long range shots in the fourth quarter, however, it was too little, too late as the Chaps increased the lead to 33 en route to the win.

Staveness overcame a slow start to produced 23 points, ten of which came in the fourth quarter, on 5 of 16 shooting with four 3-pointers. The 5'3" guard made 9 of 13 free throws, to go along with seven rebounds, three blocks, and two assists. Staveness leads the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game, and currently ranks third in all of Region 4 with 5.2 made free throws a contest.

Aune, a native of Winona, Minnesota, matched a career-best with nine points after recording her first game with multiple three-pointers. Freshman Mirella Zielke led the team with ten rebounds and scored three points, while sophomore Kaylee Anzalone dished out a team-high four assists. She also had five points and seven rebounds.
