WolfPack unable to stay with DuPage in road loss

Double-double for Staveness is first of her career

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - In a matchup of two teams trying to snap extended losing streaks, the College of DuPage got the better of Madison College by a 56-22 final Thursday night in a Region 4 women's basketball game. The WolfPack were led by sophomore Kayla Staveness with a double-double, but fell behind in the second quarter after a competitive opening ten minutes. Despite the loss, the Pack still own a 28-17 lead in the all-time series, while the Chaparrals have won four of the last five get-togethers.

Madison College drained three 3-pointers in the opening quarter, including two by sophomore Kaylee Anzalone, to trail by just one at 10-9 through ten minutes. The second quarter, however, saw the College of DuPage (4-10) open with a 14-0 run and eventually win the quarter by a 17-5 margin. The 27-14 halftime differential continued to grow throughout the third quarter, as the Chaps put together surges of nine and ten points to hold a 29-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

All but two of the WolfPack's seven made field goals came from outside the three-point arc, led by three from Staveness. The 5'0" guard extended her streak of games with a three-pointer to eight straight and finished with 14 points, to go along with a season-high ten rebounds for her first career double-double. She was 4 fo 14 from the field and sank 3 of 4 free throws. Staveness also produced two assists and two steals.

Anzalone also secured double-digit boards with career-best 11. The native of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, scored all six of her points in the first quarter, and also led the team with three assists. Freshman Mirella Zielke joined Anzalone in establishing a new career-high for rebounds, tracking down nine in the game.

The two teams will play again in Madison on January 23.
