MADISON, WISC. - Less than three weeks after feeling like they let a road win slip out of their grasp, the Madison College men's basketball team avenged their January 4 loss to the College of DuPage with an 83-81 Region 4 victory Tuesday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Five players scored in double-figures for the WolfPack, including a game-high 26 points from
Deante Luster, to help the extend their lead in the all-time series with the Chaparrals to 18-16.
Turnovers and missed shots were the storyline for both teams as the game began, and after the College of DuPage (13-9) took a 2-0 lead, WolfPack sophomore
Monte Mayberry drained a corner three to spark an 11-0 run over the next four minutes. That run included a
Peter Gustafson put-back dunk off a
Justin Pleasant miss, and then back-to-back
Tyler Mitchell baskets extended the lead to 16-6. The Chaparrals narrowed the deficit to just five points with 7:24 remaining in the half, and Madison College answered by tallying 20 of the next 26Â points to lead by 19 before the Chaps knocked down a late three to make it 41-25 at the half.
Visiting COD made a game of it in the second half, scoring 56 points over the final 20 minutes. For Madison College, the half belonged to Luster as the second year wing tallied 20 points to help keep the Chaps at bay. His free throws with just over six minutes to play kept the differential in double-figures before an 8-2 push made it 71-66. A pair of Mitchell free throws with 30 seconds to go gave the home team an 81-73 advantage, but five straight points by the College of DuPage brought the score within one possession at 81-78. Mitchell again handled business at the free throw line for a five-point lead with ten second remaining before the Chaps ended the game with a three to reach the final score.
Luster, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, made 10 of 20 shots with two 3-pointers and was 4 of 6 at the free throw line to finish with 26 points. It's his ninth game with 20 or more points this season, and the sixth time he's accomplished that in the past seven outings. Luster also added a team-best seven rebounds and five assists.
Freshman
Antoine Coleman dropped in a career-high 16 points thanks to 6 of 10 shooting despite an 0 for 3 start. The product of Kewaskum, Wisconsin, was a perfect 4 for 4 at the free throw line.
Gustafson came off the bench to contribute 14 points, six rebounds, two steals, and a career-high four blocked shots.
First year players
Justin Pleasant and
Tyler Mitchell, both natives of Texas, scored 11 and ten points, respectively. They each had six rebounds, with Mitchell dishing out five assists to Pleasant's four.
The WolfPack shot 45% (31-68) overall and committed just eight turnovers, marking their second lowest turnover total of the season.
