MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's basketball team put together their best performance of the season Thursday night with a lopsided 110-71 win over the Rockford University JV inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack saw five players score in double-figures, led by career-high point totals from
Deante Luster and
Tyler Mitchell, as they produced their highest scoring output and largest margin of victory in 2023-24. The Pack is now 2-0 all-time against the Regents.
Madison College scored the game's first two baskets and never relinquished the lead, which reached double-figures within the game's first nine minutes after Luster sank a transition three-pointer to make it 21-9. They steadily pulled away throughout the rest of the half and took a 56-28 advantage into the locker room.
An 8-0 run to start the second half pushed the differential to 35. An efficient night on the offensive end continued to push the score out of reach for Rockford Unversity.
Peter Gustafson's dunk with 5:24 made it 96-56, and a three-pointer from the sophomore near the four minute mark gave Madison College its largest lead of the night at 101-59.
Luster matched his career-best point total with 31 on 13 of 18 shooting with a pair of three-pointers and three free throws. The 6'3" wing boasts three games this season with 30 or more points and four for his career. Luster also finished with seven rebounds, and five assists.
Tyler Mitchell, a first year guard from Dallas, Texas, was 10 for 13 overall with a triple and four free throws to finish with 25 points, surpassing his previous career-high by a point. Mitchell has surpassed the 20-point plateau on four occasions this season.
Second year guard
Monte Mayberry sank four 3-pointers for the third time this season and tallied 14 points. Fellow sophomore
Peter Gustafson was a perfect 4 for 4 from the field and converted his lone attempt from beyond the arc en route to 13 points off the bench. The native of Monticello, Wisconsin, led the WolfPack with a career-high seven assists.
Freshman
Antoine Coleman rounded out the double-digit scorers with ten points, part of his second double-double with a career-high 12 rebounds for the Kewaskum, Wisconsin, native. Forward
Justin Pleasant nearly reached a double-double with nine points and ten boards, to go along with four assists.
The season-high scoring output was the result of Madison College shooting 55% (44-80) overall and 57% (8-14) outside the arc to establish new benchmarks in both categories for the year. The WolfPack also tied a season-low with just seven turnovers. For the game, the home team owned advantages of 22-8 in points off turnovers, 60-34 in points in the paint, and 46-31 in total rebounds.

Madison College (8-10) is off for a week until hitting the road for another game with a varsity reserve squad when they take on the Ripon College JV on Thursday, February 1. The Red Hawks own a 2-1 lead in the all-time series, however, the two programs have not played since the mid-1990s. Tip off in Ripon, Wisconsin, is set for 7:00 p.m.
