MILWAUKEE, WISC. - It was only a matter of time for
Gabe Voung and the Madison College men's soccer team to explode offensively, and that moment arrived Wednesday afternoon at Uihlein Soccer Park. The second year All-American registered a hat trick and powered the WolfPack to a season-high in goals during a 5-3 Region 4 win over in-state rival Bryant & Stratton College.
Freshman
Jamie Le Comte tallied his third goal in as many games, and he did it as the beneficiary of work done by fellow freshman
Luis Portillo. Portillo came up with a still deep in the offensive zone and made a pass to Le Comte at the top of the penatly box, and he send a low line drive past the Bobcats goalkeeper.
The 9' goal and lead was short-lived as Bryant & Stratton College (1-5-3) answered a minute later with their first goal of the match.
Voung, the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native, opened his high-scoring day with successful header off a corner kick from
Damo Lovell to regain the lead in the 16'. Once again, the Bobcats responded, as the home team netted a 24' scoring strike to even the score for a second time.
Voung and the WolfPack weren't done in the first half, posting two more goals for a 4-2 advantage at the break. A steal of a BSC throw-in led to some nifty ball movement for the WolfPack. A centering pass from Le Comte made its way through traffic and gave Voung a look at the net from 18 yards out for his second goal. Eight minutes later, sophomore
Joao Mendonca's hustle paid off. Following a turnover at midfield, Lukas Krivkava advanced the ball and sent a pass towards Voung in front of the net. Voung used a light touch to move the ball towards a hard charging Mendoca, who put away his first goal goal of the season.
A more defensive-minded second half saw fewer scoring opportunities on both sides. Bryant & Stratton College narrowed the gap to one-goal in the 78' when WolfPack goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey came up empty as he tried to intercept the on-coming attack at the top of the penalty box.
The WolfPack put the finishing touches on the 5-3 win in the 87' when Voung was fouled in the penalty box as he raced a BSC defender towards the goal. The forward converted the penalty kick for his first hat trick of the season and his ninth career multi-goal effort.
Voung, who doubled his season goal total, led the offensive charge with six total shots and five shots on goal. Madison College finished with a 15-8 edge in total shots and a slimmer 11-7 lead in shots on goal.
Goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey matched a season-high four saves in the win.
