MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College men's soccer team has scored one goal in each of it's first four matches in 2023, and prior to Sunday it was enough to earn them two wins and a loss. At Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, the WolfPack let an early 1-0 lead slip away and settled for a 1-1 draw with visiting Illinois Valley Community College.
In the game's 8', sophomore All-American
Gabe Voung put the home team on scoreboard with his second goal of the season. Voung was fouled well beyond the 18' to earn a free kick. Freshman
Felipe Dewes took the kick and lofted it over the defense before it one-hopped the goalkeeper, who was unable to handle the save. The rebound came right to Voung and he lifted it over the keeper's head into the back of the net. The assist for Dewes is his first collegiate point.
Madison College held on to the one-goal advantage into the second half when the Eagles (4-1-1) used a set play to notch the equalizer. A bouncing pass made it's way through traffic right in front of the Madison College goal until an IVCC forward made contact directly in front of an open net to beat goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey and the Pack.
While Illinois Valley owned a narrow 11-10 edge in total shots, Madison College was 9-3 better in shots on goal and boasted a 10-3 differential in corner kicks. McCloskey finished with two saves, and also prevented a goal in a 1-on-1 situation in the first half with a diving steal.
The draw is the first in the ten-match all-time series between the two programs, and the WolfPack are in front by a 7-2-1 margin.
