The Madison College Athletic Department has announced
Angel Whetstone as the next head women's basketball coach starting with the 2023-24 season. Whetstone, who becomes the 13th head coach in program history, will also assume the title of Eligibility, Compliance, & Game Management Coordinator.
"I am thrilled to have Angel Whetstone as our next Head Women's Basketball coach at Madison College. The future is certainly bright for her and the women's program," commented Director of Athletics Jason Verhelst. "Not only will she help our women's basketball program, she will greatly benefit our department in her other roles, as well. I really look forward to working with her."
Whetstone has spent six years coaching in collegiate athletics, with her most recent stop as the video coordinator and creative content for the women's basketball team at NCAA Division I Missouri State University for the past year. She helped the Bears to a 20-12 record and a berth in the WNIT Tournament. Prior to MSU, Whetstone was the director of basketball operations at NCAA Division I SIU-Edwardsville for two years, which included a brief stint as the interim head coach during the spring of 2021, and was an assistant coach and director of operations at NCAA Division II Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida.
"I am extremely excited about this part of my journey as the head women's basketball coach at Madison College! I want to thank our athletic director, Jason Verhelst, for the opportunity to lead this program," said Whetstone about the new opportunity.
During the 2018-19 season, while attending graduate school, she guided the Texas A&M Women's Basketball Club Team to a 31-4 record, the 2018 Fall Lone Star Club Championship, and a NIRSA 2019 Regional Championship, while also serving as the operations assistant for the Aggies women's volleyball program.
Whetstones's coaching resume dates back to the 2013-14 season, when she was a student assistant coach and team manager at Rollins College. The Tars made three trips to the NCAA Tournament during her first stint with the program. She also helped Bishop Moore Catholic High School to a 2016 Florida 5A State Runner-up finish as an assistant, and later assisted the girl's varsity team at Brazos Christian School in Texas during the 2018-19 season.
Whetstone holds a bachelor's degree in Business from Rollins College, and a Master's Degree in Sports Management from Texas A&M University.
As a prep, Whetstone was a two-sport athlete at Lake Howell High School in Winter Park, Florida, playing both basketball and volleyball.
She will inherit a program that went 8-20 last season under co-head coaches Mike Mayfield and James Adams. The roster included six first year players eligible to return, including all-region guards
Jordanna Davis and Kayla Stavenes.
