Sweep of Harper extends win streak to six for #6 WolfPack

Johannes adds to HR total in highly productive doubleheader

PALATINE, ILL. - The Madison College baseball team picked up two more wins Monday with a road sweep of Harper College in a Region 4 and North Central Community College Conference doubleheader. The WolfPack, who remained the #6-ranked team in the latest NJCAA Division II Poll, outlasted the Hawks in a high-scoring 14-9 contest in the opener, and then left town with an 8-3 victory in the finale.  The win gives the Pack a six game win streak, while also extending their win streak over the Hawks to seven straight with a 25-5 lead in the all-time series.

Game #1: #6 Madison College 14, Harper College 9

A massive two-out rally to open the day gave Madison College a five-run lead. Following outs by the first two batters, the WolfPack saw six consecutive batters reach safely. Gabe Roessler scored the first run on a wild pitch, Carson Shepard and Grant Ross each drove in a run, and an error by Harper on a ball put in play by Ryan Santi led to two more runs crossing home. Ross added another RBI-single in the third to make it 6-0 as Johannes touched home. In the fourth, Dayton Rozinski-Hicks' double to left plated Colin Obermann, and Rozinski-Hicks tallied a run on a wild pitch to make it 8-0.

The Hawks fought back in the home half of the fourth with six runs on three walks, an error, and three hits, the last of which was a three-run homer off starter Ben Kasten. An error and a single from Rozinski-Hicks with a runner in scoring position extended the differential to four in the fifth, and Johannes crushed his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the sixth for a 12-6 lead. After the home team cut it to 12-9 heading into the seventh, the WolfPack put the finishing touches on the win when Johannes singled in Roessler and a hit by pitch of Ross forced in a run to reach 14-9.

Johannes, a first year player from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, was one of five players with multiple hits in the game for Madison. He went 3 for 4 to match a season-high for hits, and generated a three runs scored and three runs batted in. Frehner, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, native, racked up three hits right head of Johannes and scored two runs.

Ross finished with two hits, three RBI, and a run scored, while Rozinski-Hicks added two hits, two runs driven in, and a run scored. Roessler and Obermann both scored twice, with Obermann reaching on a pair of hits and Roessler via three walks.

Righthander Ben Kasten (3-1) worked five innings and struck out six batters. The freshman allowed six runs on eight hits and four walks. Allen Leitner tossed two innings in relief and generated two earned runs, one unearned run, three hits, two walks, and three K's.

Game #2: #6 Madison College 8, Harper College 3

The guests once again put a crooked number on the scoreboard in the opening half inning of the day's second game. A Harper College (7-24, 0-8) error allowed Nick Nowak to score before a wild pitch brought in Gabe Roessler. Carter Stebane's fielder's choice ground ball to second plated Will Johannes to make it 3-0. Roessler manufactured his own run in the third, lacing a double to left, stealing third, and then scoring on a throwing error by the catcher on the steal attempt.

The Hawks made it 4-1 in the fourth thanks to an error on Roessler at short, but the sophomore came back in the fifth with a one-out single. He then hustled around the bases to score on a double from Johannes. Carson Shepard and Jake Petasek both singled in a run for an 8-1 differential. Two Harper runs in the fifth made it a five-run game, and the home team stranded five runners over the final three innings.

Roessler was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and one batted in for his third three-hit game of the season, two of which also came with three runs. Stebane matched a career-best with his second game with three hits and first of the season. He also scored one run.

Shepard finished with two hits, one run, and one RBI, while Johannes had a hit, two runs, and a run batted in.

Freshman Nick West (4-1) earned his third consecutive win by working five innings and fanning five. The former Verona Area HS athlete gave up two earned runs and one unearned on four hits and three walks. The final two innings belonged to Kellan Short, who kept the Hawks off the scoreboard with four strikeouts and two hits allowed.
