MADISON, WISC. - Twenty-seven days after the first installment of a home-and-home series, Madison College and the College of Lake County met for another nine-inning battle Tuesday at Robin Roberts Field. The Lancers used a big seventh innings to rally past the #6-ranked WolfPack 7-3 to split the series after the Pack won
9-3 last month. The split puts the all-time series at 31-8 in favor of Madison College.
Madison scored a single run in three consecutive innings to go up 3-0 on the Lancers, who stranded two runners in each of the first two innings. The WolfPack, who left the bases loaded in the home half of the first, came through in the second with a leadoff single from
Carson Shepard and a run-scoring base hit from
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks.
A CLC error in the third on a
Will Johannes grounder that allowed
Clayton Slack to cross home. And in the fourth, Shepard again led off with a hit, recording a double and eventually scoring on
Colin Obermann's RBI single up the middle for a three-run advantage.
A pitching change for Madison College in the seventh brought
Logan LeTourneau in to relieve starter
Liam Stumpf, and LeTourneau proceeded to hit three consecutive batters. After a fielder's choice put a run on the board for the Lancers, freshman
Evan Iwinski was brought in to try and limit the damage. A walk re-loaded the bases for the College of Lake County (20-16-1), setting the stage for a grand slam to put the guests on top 5-3.
The Lancers added another run in the eighth and one more in the ninth to put the WolfPack down 7-3 entering their final at-bats. With Rozinski-Hicks aboard following a single, Madison saw the next two batters go down; however, Slack reached on a walk and an error put
Gabe Roessler at first to bring the tying run to the plate.
Will Johannes, the team's home run leader and cleanup hitter, was ahead 2-0 in the count before three consecutive strikes ended the game on a K.
Shepard, a native of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, led the offensive attack with three hits and two runs scored to match his only prior three-hit, two-run effort against CLC last month. Two of Shepard's hits went for extra bases.
Slack and Rozinski-Hicks each had two hits, with Slack scoring a run and Rozinski-Hicks drove in a run.
Stumpf, a freshman righthander, had the WolfPack in line for the win with his six innings of scoreless baseball. The Dodgeville, Wisconsin, native scattered three hits and four walks, while also striking out seven.
LeTourneau (0-2) was credited with three earned runs in his third of an inning, and Iwinski tossed two innings and allowed two earned runs and two unearned runs. He was credited with four strikeouts, three hits, and three free passes. Freshman
Eamonn Mulhern was the final WolfPack arm used to finish out the final two-thirds of the ninth inning, and eventually did after four hits and a hit batter.
