Win streak snapped as rival Bobcats shut out #3 Madison

WolfPack produce just three hits, travel to play BSC in 1x9 today in Oconomowoc

OCONOMOWOC, WISC. - Tuesday was not Madison College's day. After ten consecutive wins, the third-ranked WolfPack was shut out at Robin Roberts Field in a 10-0 loss in seven innings to in-state rival Bryant & Stratton College that began a 1x9 home-and-home series. It's the first time the Pack has been held without a run in 2023, and comes after the offense had averaged an impressive 10.8 runs and 11.5 hits over the previous 13 games.

The game opened on a bad note, with WolfPack second baseman Grant Ross committing an error on a ground ball in the first at bat. The Bobcats would load the bases, and then use a walk from starting pitcher Chris Byhre and a ground ball out to put two runs on the scoreboard. It remained 2-0 until the fourth when BSC tallied a two-run base hit to make it 4-0.

Reliever Logan LeTourneau took over in the fifth, and an inning later saw four more Bobcats touch home. With two outs, back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and one run scored via a wild pitch and two more scored on another WolfPack error. The final run was driven in with a double.

A pair of walks to start the top of the seventh issued by righthander Allen Leitner set up BSC for an opportunity to secure a ten-run lead, which they did on a two-RBI single with two outs. Madison stranded two runners in the bottom half - their only inning with more than four batters and more than one runner aboard - as the game ended via run-rule.

Charlie Marion, Nick Nowak, and Carson Shepard each registered a hit in a game that saw the Bryant & Stratton starting pitcher face the minimum batters in the first three innings and five of the seven he pitched.

Byhre fell to 2-2 with the loss, and gave up two earned and two unearned wins in his four innings. He was tagged for four hits and issued two walks, while also striking out five. LeTourneau also allowed four runs, however, one one was earned, on three hits and three walks with one K. After his two innings, Leitner worked the final frame and surrendered two runs on a hit and three walks with two strike outs.

The BSC win snaps a six game win streak for Madison in the head-to-head series, which now stands at 9-2 in favor of the WolfPack.
