OCONOMOWOC, WISC. - Hoping for a little revenge after a rough day Tuesday, the Madison College baseball team led in-state and Region 4 rival Bryant & Stratton College for eight-and-a-half innings before the Bobcats rallied for a 3-2 win at Wisconsin Brewing Company Park to complete a sweep of a home-and-home series of nine-inning games. Freshman
Michael Carpenter struck out nine batters and nearly tossed a complete game win. The consecutive losss are the just the second time this season the Pack has suffered back-to-back setbacks, which narrow the all-time series with BSC to 9-3 in favor of Madison College.
The WolfPack took a 1-0 lead in the game's first three batters when
Gabe Roessler followed a
Charlie Marion double with a single up the middle and Marion raced home. Thanks to a impressive pitcher's duel, the one-run lead held until the bottom of the sixth. The Bobcats (15-10) opened with a double and two batters later scored on a ground out.
Madison answered quickly in the top of the seventh when freshman
Will Johannes scored from first on a line drive double to center by
Carson Shepard. Hoping to pad their advantage with two runners on and two away,
Clayton Slack's line drive was caught by the centerfielder to end the threat.
Carpenter, a Hartland, Wisconsin, native, continued to frustrate opposing hitters into the bottom of the ninth, which opened with a double and the lefthander's ninth strike out. Back-to-back singles followed and produced the game-tying run, which prompted coach
Mike Davenport to call on first year arm
Nick West from the bullpen. The first pitch offered by the former Verona Area HS athlete was batted into right field and the winning run was able to score from third for the walk-off.
Carpenter (1-1) suffered his first loss after throwing 103 pitches and fanning a career-best nine batters, matching the top number for a WolfPack pitcher this season. He was credited with three earned runs on seven hits and zero walks.
Madison College followed a three-hit effort at home with a five-hit performance on the road. Roessler and Shepard each had a hit and a run batted in, while Marion had a hit and a run scored. Slack and
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks each had a hit, as well.
