MADISON, WISC. - Four days after defeating Rock Valley College by
ten runs on the road, the Madison College baseball team completed the sweep of a home-and-home series of 1x9 games with a 14-2 dismantling of the Golden Eagles on Monday at
Robin Roberts Field. The seven-inning, run-rule victory with a season-high 18 hits extends a season-best win streak to ten for the WolfPack, who fell a spot to #3 in the
NJCAA Division II Poll just hours before first pitch. The Pack outscored RVC by a 28-6 margin over 16 innings to win their sixth straight in the all-time series, which sits at 41-22 in favor of Madison.
The WolfPack sent nine or more batters to the plate in each of the first two innings against Rock Valley (16-14), and saw the visitors bring in a new pitcher to start every inning throughout the game. Five singles in a row in the bottom of the first included a RBI-grounder up the middle from
Payton Frehner to make it 1-0 as
Clayton Slack scored from second. During the next at-bat, a throwing error by the RVC catcher during a double steal allowed
Gabe Roessler to cross home, and then
Will Johannes singled to left to drive in Frehner for a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles came back in the second with the first of two runs they would score against starter
Andres Kleinsek, a solo home run over the left field fence. Kleinsek's teammates answered the call and posted a four-run second inning. With the bases loaded after three straight singles and two outs on the board,
Ryan Santi lined a single to center to score Slack and Roessler.
Carter Stebane follows with a hard ground ball through the right side to plate Frehner, and a wild pitch two batters later brought Santi home to make it 7-1.Â
Another four-run frame was engineered in the fourth to create a double-digit advantage.
Dayton Rozinski-Hicks and
Carson Shepard each singled in a run, and Slack and Roessler both had productive outs to make it an 11-1 differential. Despite a RVC run in the sixth, the WolfPack brought the seven-inning run-rule into play with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Roessler drove in Rozinski-Hicks, Shepard raced in on a wild pitch, and Santi singled in Roessler.
Roessler, a second year infielder, was a perfect 3 for 3 with a walk, a team-high three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Frehner finished 3 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored, and one driven in. The first three-hit game in the Waukesha, Wisconsin, native's career extends his hitting streak to six games, during which he is batting .550.
Santi, a first baseman from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, was 3 for 5 and drove in three runs for the third time in his last six games played. He also scored one run and now has hit safely in eight of his last nine outings.
Two others produced multiple hits, every starter registered at least one base knock, and five players scored at least two times for the Pack.
On the hill, Kleinsek (3-0) struck out a career-high nine batters over six innings of work to remain unbeaten on the season. The Verona, Wisconsin, product allowed two earned runs on three hits and three walks before
Evan Iwinski fanned two and allowed a hit in the top of the seventh.
