Offense shines in weekend sweep of Milwaukee Tech for #2 WolfPack

Win streak reaches nine straight heading into another busy week

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College bats were hot on Saturday, combining for 22 runs and 23 hits to help the WolfPack to a sweep of in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College in the North Central Community College Conference opener at Robin Roberts Field. The Pack, ranked #2 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, held off the Stormers for an 11-7 win in the opener, and then rolled to an 11-2 decision in the finale to extend their current winning streak to nine games. The sweep increased the Madison lead in the all-time series to 98-16.

Game #1: #2 Madison College 11, Milwaukee Area Technical College 7

After MATC-Milwaukee used two hits to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the WolfPack stacked together three singles in the home half to jump ahead 2-1. Charlie Marion drove in Grant Ross and Clayton Slack with a line drive to center. Gabe Roessler came through in the second with a RBI single to right that plated Carson Shepard to increase the advantage to two.

The Stormers answered with three runs in the third thanks to three hits and two walks against starter Alex Hayes. The 4-3 did not last long, as Madison put three runs on the board in the home half of the third. The first two runs came in on an error by the third baseman, and the final tally was the result of a run-scoring single by Shepard.

The WolfPack seized control in the fourth, scoring three runs to make it a 9-4 advantage. Marion single in Roessler, and then scored on Dayton Rozinski-Hicks single to left. A bases loaded walk of Nick Nowak capped the inning. The scoring continued with another Marion RBI-single in the fifth and a run-scoring walk of Ross in a sixth inning that featured three walks and a hit by pitch.

Marion, a first year outfielder from Franklin, Wisconsin, drove in four runs for the second time in the last four games. He also added two runs scored as the result of a 3 for 4 hitting day that included a base on balls.

Roessler finished with two hits, two walks, two runs scored, and one batted in.

Hayes (4-0) remained perfect on the season with six innings of work that included five strikeouts. The lefthander surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks. Freshman Eamonn Mulhern tossed the final innings and was tagged for three runs on three hits, but did fan a pair of batters.

Game #2: #2 Madison College 11, Milwaukee Area Technical College 2

The home team raced out to a big lead early in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning and three more in the second. With the bases loaded freshman Payton Frehner singled in Jake Petasek and Clayton Slack, and fellow first year Will Johannes followed with a double to left that brough home Gabe Roessler. The final run of the opening frame came as the result of a ground out to the right side that scored Frehner. In the second, the Pack had two on with two outs when Ross singled up the middle to plate Petasek, and Frehner came up next to rip a two-run double.

The seven-run lead remained until Milwaukee Tech (12-13, 2-2) was able to generate a pair of run in the fifth. That same inning saw the Pack register RBI-singles from Petasek and Roessler to push the score to 10-2. Colin Obermann's sacrifice fly in the sixth was enough for Johannes to give Madison an 11-2 differential.

The offense piled up 13 hits, with five different players each with two hits apiece. Frehner, a Waukesha, Wisconsin, native used his two hits to drive in a career-high four runs, as well as scoring one. Ross had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored.

Petasek led the team with a career-best three runs scored and one batted in with his lone hit. Roessler's two hits and a walk led to a pair of runs scored, matching the two runs scored by Slack.

While the offense was rolling, first year arm Ben Kasten (2-0) picked up his second career win with five innings of work. The Hales Corners, Wisconsin, product struck out five, and allowed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. Adam Balcerak pitched in relief for the final two innings, holding the Stormers to one hit and fanning two.
