MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team found themselves in an early hole, despite making two of their first three shots, and were never able to recover in a 78-42 loss to the University of Dubuque JV in the home opener at
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Wednesday night. Freshman forward
Cayla Golackson recorded her second consecutive double-double and was one of two players to score in double-figures for the WolfPack, who still lead the all-time series with the NCAA Division III Spartans by a 4-3 tally.
Golackson hit a pair of layups in the opening minutes to give Madison College a 4-0 lead, and a
Kayla Staveness free throw following a UD bucket pushed the advantage to 5-2. The Spartans followed with the first of ten 3-pointers in the game, triggering an 11-0 run. The WolfPack howled back to within three with an
Emily Rottier-Douangmala bucket sandwiched between a trio of free throws from
Kaylee Anzalone, however, Dubuque closed the first quarter with six straight points to lead by nine.
The momentum carried into the second quarter as the visiting Spartans tallied nine more points to make it a 15-0 surge and build an 18-point edge. The differential grew to 22 at halftime even though the teams played the final six minutes with a 13-11 score in favor of UD.
The second half was fairly low-scoring for both teams, however, Dubuque increased their lead by winning a competitive third quarter 14-10 and then holding the Pack to just seven points in the fourth.
Madison College shot 30% (15-50) for the game, but struggled for the second consecutive outing from long range with just two makes in 16 attempts (12.5%). They also shot 55% (10-18) at the free throw line. The WolfPack did limit the turnovers to 19, however, UD took advantage with a 29-3 edge in points off turnovers. Madison College did win the battle on the boards with a 40-34 lead in rebounds
Staveness posted a team-high 13 points on 4 of 14 shooting, as the Rio, Wisconsin, native, made the team's only two 3-pointers.
Golackson, a native of Darlington, Wisconsin, posted a double-double of 11 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. She was 5 for 12 with a free throw, and also led the team with two assists.
