MADISON, WISC. - Despite a valiant effort, the Madison College men's soccer team was unable to erase a two-goal deficit in a 2-1 loss to Region 4 opponent Moraine Valley Community College on Sunday night at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Sophomore
Gabe Voung tallied the team's lone goal via a penalty kick, moving the All-American within a goal of tying the school's all-time goals scored record of 33. The setback gives the Cyclones a 2-0 lead in the all-time series. Prior to opening kick, the WolfPack recognized an eight-member sophomore Class of 2023 that included
Angel Gongora,
Adrian Henkovic,
Naseem Jobeety,
Lukas Krikava,
Jamie Le Comte,
Phil McCloskey,
Joao Mendonca, and
Gabe Voung.
Visiting Moraine Valley Community College (6-4-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a 15' goal on their first shot on goal of the match. The advantage grew to 2-0 in the 33' on an unassisted goal on their second shot on goal. At the half, MVCC owned a 3-0 edge in shots on goal, while Madison College held a narrow 6-5 lead in total shots.
In the second half, the WolfPack began their comeback attempt, and as they applied more pressure on the Cyclones defense, the Pack was awarded with a penalty kick. Voung, a forward from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, was knocked down in the penalty area and was awarded the 1-on-1 kick, which he converted inside the right post. The goal marks the seventh of the season and 32nd of his career, moving him one back of the all-time record of 33 set by Toby Andrews in 2017.
Madison College sent wave after wave of players towards the goal, and even saw its newest player, freshman forward
Isaiah Breininger put a shot on goal in the 78'. The best chance came with a little over two minutes remaining when a deflected ball inside the penalty area was tracked down by Voung, who unleashed a strike towards the goal and was denied by the right post.
Voung ended the game with four total shots and was one of three WolfPack players to put a shot on goal. The match ended with an 11-10 advantage in total shots by the home team, however, the Cyclones were on top 6-3 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks.
Despite the early goals, sophomore goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey settled in to make four saves and give his team a chance to rally.
