WolfPack secures key Region 4 win over Waubonsee, keeps win streak alive

Madison College has outscored opponents 26-1 over last five matches

MADISON, WISC. - A string of shutouts was quickly snapped Saturday afternoon at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, however, a more important streak of match wins was extended as the Madison College women's soccer team took down Waubonsee Community College by a 5-1 final in a Region 4 contest. The WolfPack scored five unanswered goals, led by a two-goal and five-point performance by sophomore Kierstin McHugh. The meeting marked the first all-time matchup with the Chiefs.

It took less than two minutes for Waubonsee Community College (7-5), the third-highest-scoring team in the region coming in, to net a goal against the WolfPack. The scoring strike marked the first first goal allowed in five matches, and ended a string of 388 consecutive scoreless minutes by Madison College goalkeepers.

The Pack, however, had their goalkeeper's back, and delivered the equalizer two minutes later. McHugh began her big day with a conversion off a pass by freshman Atziry Ocampo. The score remained even until the 22' when Madison College continued their spectacular play on corner kicks. McHugh put the ball in play, and sophomore midfielder Britney Lazo punched in the game-winner. It was the first career goal in 22 matches played for the McFarland, Wisconsin, native.

The home team added a little breathing room as the first half was winding to a close. Longtime friends and former prep teammates McHugh and Savi Pursley connected in the 42' to push the advantage to 3-1. Pursley delivered a perfect pass across the top of the penalty box as she drew a pair of defenders, giving McHugh an open and uncontested look at her second goal of the match and sixth of the season.

Pursley was at the center of attention early in the second half as she raced into the penalty box to secure possession and was fouled by a Chiefs defender. The second year defender/midfielder was awarded a penalty shot, and easily kicked it past a diving keeper just inside the right post. Pursley now trails her fellow Madison, Wisconsin, native by a goal for the team lead.

The WolfPack weren't quite done, and as they continued to battle into the final minutes, Pursely sent an assist to freshman Delaney Bracken, who notched her third goal of the season.

Not lost amidst the scoring was the outstanding play in net by second year goalkeeper Morgan Thompson, who secured a season-high 13 saves for her fifth career match with double-digit saves. The native of New Glarus, Wisconsin, helped the WolfPack overcome a 17-10 deficit in total shots and a 14-7 differential in shots on goal that favored WCC.
