LIBERTYVILLE, ILL. - Following their 7-1 start to the season, the Madison College women's soccer team has had a rough October with injuries piled on to a 0-2-2 mark entering Saturday's Region 4 match at the College of Lake County. Unfortunately, the trend continued in heartbreaking fashion as the WolfPack settled for their third straight draw with a 1-1 final against the Lancers in a contest that was shifted to Libertyville High School due to field conditions on the CLC home pitch following several days of rain.
Madison College started strong with three shots and one on goal in the first 13 minutes. They broke through with a goal in the 14' to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Logan Vollert set up for a corner kick and lofted a pass towards the goal box, where fellow first year
Delaney Bracken out-jumped the Lancers and banged a header off the crossbar and into the goal. The 5'11" forward from Monona, Wisconsin, boasts six goals on the season and has scored in back-to-back matches.
The two teams continued to battle it out the rest of the first half, with the visitors putting up three more shots and another on goal, and most of the second with the WolfPack clinging to a 1-0 lead. A College of Lake County (6-2-5) turnover near midfield late in the 90' gave Bracken a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, who came up with a tremendous save on a shot from the top of the penalty area. The Lancers quickly moved the ball down the pitch, and with the final second ticking off the clock, sent a shot towards the goal that was deflected in before the final whistle.
The match finished with the Lancers owning an 8-4 edge in shots on goal, an 11-8 lead in total shots, and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Bracken finished with five total shots, three shots on goal, and one successful header. Sophomore
Tazhia Aune recorded the only other shot on goal.
Morgan Thompson, a second year goalkeeper, was credited with seven saves and one goal allowed.
The setback is the first in three all-time meetings with Lake County.
