WolfPack battle undefeated Oakton into fourth quarter

Davis' career-high 23 points not enough as Madison College takes fourth straight loss

MADISON, WISC. - Trying to end a three-game losing skid against an undefeated opponent proved to be a tough task Tuesday night for the shorthanded Madison College women's basketball team as they suffered a closer-than-it-appears 92-73 loss to Oakton Community College. A 31-point fourth quarter by the Owls turned the five-point contest into a lopsided result that marked the WolfPack's fourth straight loss, which matches their longest losing streak this season. Freshman Jordanna Davis tallied a career-best 23 points in the first-ever meeting between the two Region 4 programs.

The game's first quarter featured three ties and four lead changes as the two teams battled for control. Back-to-back layups by Davis and Reyna Knox put the Pack up 17-14, and Davis later tied the game at 18-18 with a free throw. Oakton Community College (14-0) knocked down a jumper with 25 seconds to play to take a two-point lead, which they would never relinquish. The Owls extended the differential to ten points on two occasions in the second quarter, but Davis capped a 13-point first half with a late layup to pull Madison College within 42-34.

After OCC slowly built a 16-point advantage in the third quarter, the WolfPack, which suited up just six players as a result of some recent injuries, closed the quarter on a 12-3 run to trail by seven entering the fourth quarter. Freshman Kayla Staveness drained a jump shot to open the fourth and make it a two-possession game, however, an 11-0 run from the Owls pushed the score to 81-61 with five minutes to play and eventually outscored the Pack 31-19 over the final ten minutes.

Davis, a La Crosse, Wisconsin, native, surpassed her previous career-high of 21 points set in the season-opener on November 1. The 5'7" guard now boasts three games of 20 or more points, and had produced double-digit scoring in each of the last three contest. Davis finished 8 of 11 with one 3-pointer and made 6 of 8 free throws. She also added five rebounds.

Three others reached double-digit point totals, with Taylor Ripp dropping in 13 points on 3 of 8 shooting and a perfect 7 for 7 at the charity stripe. The sophomore from Lodi, Wisconsin, led the team with eight boards, while also dishing out three assists.

First year guard Kayla Staveness generated her third game with at least ten points, scoring a dozen on a 4 for 8 effort that included one long range hit and three free throws. She added a pair of rebounds and steals.

Knox, a second year guard nearly registered her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high nine assists. The native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, went 4 for 8 with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws.

The Owls took advantage of 28 Madison College miscues to build a 44-14 lead in points off turnovers, and used 20 offensive rebounds en route to a 24-5 differential in second chance scoring. The WolfPack shot 49% (24-49) for the game, marking their second-highest shooting percentage in a game this season. They also added a 22 for 30 (73%) performance as a team from the line.
