MADISON, WISC. - Visiting Western Technical College provided a stiff test Tuesday night inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium as the Madison College women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 home win. The WolfPack, who moved up a spot to #11 in the
NJCAA Division III Poll on Monday, served up 18 aces as part of a 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 25-14 decision to push their current win streak to three straight and match the team's total of 15 wins from last season. The win also gives the Pack a 58-40-9 advantage in the all-time series going back to 1980.
The 18 aces falls one shy of matching the team's season-high, and included four players with multiple aces. Freshman
Kendall Weisensel led the way with a career-high six aces, highlighted by a sequence of three consecutive down the final stretch of the fourth set.
Gabby Hack and Aubie Kappes each had four aces, with Hack's coming in two sets of back-to-back perfect serves.
Madison College started the match with an 8-2 run that included the first of Hack's twin aces, however, the Cavaliers surged back to within 9-7. Kappes used two of her aces as part of a service run to regain a 15-8 edge as the home team eventually reached a set-high eight point advantage at 18-10. After winning the opening set by seven, the Pack found themselve in a much tighter battle in the second set. After erasing an early 4-0 lead for Western Technical College (3-5) thanks to consecutive Hack aces to make it 5-5, neither team led by more than two points until the WolfPack seized an 16-12 edge mid-way through. The Cavaliers again pulled even at 22-22 before a
Tyra Anderson ace gave Madison College set point at 24-23. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers dug deep and pulled out three straight points for a 26-24 win in extra points.
The fourth set was also quite competitive early on, but the home team broke an 11-11 tie with four straight points as they went on to claim 14 of the final 19 points to win the set by nine. The momentum carried into the fourth set, which began with a 7-1 run for the Pack. Back-to-back blocks by
MacKenzie Plunkett pushed the lead to 12-4, and the differential at 19-10, Weisensel delivered three straight aces to put the match out of reach.
Anderson, a former Sun Prairie HS athlete, was tops offensively with 13 kills for her 11th match with double-digit kills. Hack also reached double-figures with ten kills to mark just her third effort with ten or more. The Lake Mills, Wisconsin, native also led the team with a .250 attack percentage. Madison College finished with 41 kills and had double-digit kills in three of the four sets. They produced a dozen kills in the opening set, and closed the match with a set-best .333 efficiency in the fourth. The WolfPack finished with a .160 attack percentage.
Freshman setter
Daryn Schaefer racked up 40 assists on the 41 kills. The native of Mazomanie, Wisconsin, reached that plateau for just the second time this season.
Defensively, Kappes collected a season-high 15 digs and played the entire match as the libero, while Plunkett denied a team-leading four attacks.
