JOLIET, ILL. - Freshman
Dominick Ramirez is riding a hot scoring streak after producing his second consecutive two-goal effort Wednesday night in helping the Madison College men's soccer team rally from a 2-0 deficit with four second half goals to defeat Joliet Junior College by a 4-2 score in a North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 match. Ramirez' second scoring strike proved to be the game-winner as it put the WolfPack ahead 3-2 with 15 minutes remaining in the match. The Pack have won seven in a row to lead the all-time series 15-12-4 against the Wolves, with 13 of those wins coming since 2015.
Neither team was able to put a tally on the scoreboard over the first 40-plus minutes of the match, as both team's goalkeepers were up to the challenge against 11 total shots. With the scoreless contest nearing halftime, Joliet Junior College (2-8, 1-2) earned a corner kick in the 42'. The set play resulted in a successful goal against
Phil McCloskey and the WolfPack.
Early in the second half, the Wolves took a Madison College foul to gain possession and quickly moved the ball up the field before lofting a shot over the outstretched arms of McCloskey for a two-goal lead. But the WolfPack had an answer, and it came in a hurry. The Pack played the kickoff back to
Tomas Garcia, who sent a lead pass up the middle of the pitch for Ramirez, and the collected to ball behind the JJC defense to send a perfect kick into the net.Â
The game's equalizer came in the 73' when a Madison College throw in put the ball atop the penalty area for a shot by
Angel Gongora that was deflected in front of the net by the Wolves 'keeper. First year forward
Gabe Voung was able to race in for the rebound goal to even the score.
Playing with momentum, Madison College continued to put pressure on Joliet Junior College, and a trip of Voung inside the penalty box awarded the WolfPack a penalty kick. Ramirez stepped up drilled a kick off the crossbar that caromed straight down and inside the goal line to put the visitors ahead 3-2. A beautiful series of passes from
Adair Tlato to Voung to
Evan Thom finished with an open-net look for sophomore
Caeben Schomber and he nailed his fifth goal of the year in the 87'.
Madison College owned a 22-10 advantage in total shots and a 13-8 edge in shots on goal. Ramirez, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, led the way with five total shots and was one of five players to put two shots on goal. His third game this season with two goals puts him at seven goals this fall. He now ranks tied for fourth in all off NJCAA Division III, just two spots and four goals back of Voung, as the Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native boasts 11 goals and sits second in the nation.
McCloskey added six saves to his growing total on the year, which stands at 51.
