WolfPack hammer Morton College with season high 22 runs, 3 home runs

Storbakken ties school record with seven RBI

MADISON, WISC. - Madison College exploded for a season-high 22 runs and bashed a season-best three home runs in a resounding 22-2 defeat of Morton College on Friday at Robin Roberts Field. The #2-ranked WolfPack, who had posted 21 runs in two prior games this season, had not surpassed that total since a 30-0 win over Highland Community College in the 2015 season. Zach Storbakken tied a school record with seven runs batted in, and was one of three batters to smash a home run in the win, with Brady Jurgella and Gabe O'Brien producing the other two.

Madison College began the game with a monster seven-run first inning, starting a stretch of four straight innings with a run scored. A double and four consecutive walks gave the WolfPack an early 2-0 edge, and immediately sent the Panthers starting pitcher out of the game. Following a two-run single by Cameron Dupont, O'Brien clubbed his first home run of the year, a three-run blast to right to cap the inning. It's also the second career homer for the Eau Claire, Wisconsin, native.

Three more runs in the second inning put the Region 4 matchup comfortably in the Pack's control. Two more walks put a pair of runners on for Jurgella, who took advantage with the team's second three-run home run in as many innings. It's the second blast this spring for the former Menasha HS athlete, and his sixth at Madison College.

The game was truly out of reach after the third inning, where the home team drove in a half-dozen more runs to take a 16-0 advantage. Three more free passes loaded the bases for Storbakken, who already had one RBI in the game, and the power-hitting right-hander sent a 1-0 pitch well beyond the left field wall for the WolfPack's first grand slam of the season. It's his team-leading sixth long ball in 2022 and 14th of his career, tying for eighth-most in team history. A single and two more walks again loaded the bases, and second baseman Carter Stebane singled to right to plate two more.

Storbakken singled in Gunnar Doyle in the fourth inning to make it 17-0, and his line drive double to right in the sixth scored Jake Fulton and Gabe Roessler to give Storbakken the record-tying seventh RBI. The native of Sussex, Wisconsin, finished 3 for 3 with two extra base hits and three runs scored. An error and a run-scoring single from Fulton in the sixth ended the scoring for Madison College, while Morton College (32-17) avoided the shutout with a two-run double off relief pitcher Dayne Louis in the seventh.

The WolfPack pounded out 16 hits, their second highest total of the year, and made seven of them go for extra bases. First baseman Cameron Dupont also had three hits and finished with three runs scored and two batted in. O'Brien and Fulton were the only other players with multiple hits. O'Brien produced three RBI and a run scored, while Fulton had one of each. Despite only one hit, Jurgella, who drew a pair of walks, registered five runs batted in and three runs scored. Doyle was awarded three base on balls and added one hit en route to scoring a team-high four runs, with four other crossing home three times.

While the offense was piling up numbers, starter Jett Thielke (7-1) was ending an impressive regular season with his seventh win. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native held the Panthers scoreless over six innings to drop his team-leading earned run average to 1.28 over 42.1 innings. He walked one and struck out six, giving the right-hander 55 K's this spring. Louis worked the one inning, and was tagged for two runs on a hit and two walks, while also fanning two.

Madison College (37-6) has won 12 of the last 13 meetings with Morton College, and boast a 20-6 all-time series lead.
