Win streak halted with losses at South Suburban for #2 WolfPack

Rally falls short in opener against top Region 4 Division I team

CHICAGO, ILL. - A battle between two of the top teams in Region 4 baseball ended with Madison College suffering a pair of losses to South Suburban College on Saturday, ending a six-game win streak. The games moved to Curtis Granderson Stadium on the campus of UIC due to wet conditions in South Holland, Illinois, and Bulldogs, who own the best record among Region 4 Division I teams, earned a sweep with wins of 4-3 and 4-0 over the #2-ranked WolfPack. The Pack entered the twin bill with wins in four straight games against SSC, who now owns a narrow 23-21 edge in the all-time series.

Game #1: South Suburban College 4, #2 Madison College 3

A pair of walks issued by starter Carson Fluno in the first inning led to a run for South Suburban College, which held up until the Madison College bats produced a pair of scores in the fourth. Jake Nelson led off with a double to left, and scored when Gunnar Doyle followed with a single up the middle. An error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt at second put Doyle 90-feet from home, and he was able to tag up and score on Brady Jurgella's sacrifice fly to right.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom half to tie the game at 2-2, and two more runs in the fifth, including a lead-off homer, gave SSC the lead for good. Facing their final at-bat in the seventh, the WolfPack put two runners one with a single and a walk, and a fielder's choice left runners at the corners with two outs. A succesful double steal and an error by the shortstop made it 4-3 with Jurgella scoring and Jake Fulton moving into scoring position as the tying run. Unfortunately, Eduardo Saucedo struck out swining on the next pitch to end the game.

Doyle, a native of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, accounted for three of the team's five hits, going 3 for 3 with a runs scored and one batted in. Jurgella also drove in a run and scored another as part of a 1 for 3 ffort with a walk.

Fluno (3-1) suffered his first pitching loss of the season after giving up four earned runs on just five hits, however, he did walk four. The former Sun Prairie HS athlete struck out five in his 4.1 innings before giving way to Alex Hayes for the final inning-and-two-thirds, which yielded two hits and two strikeouts.

Game #2: South Suburban College 4, #2 Madison College 0

Madison College was unable to come through with a timely hit in the finale of the doubleheader, including leaving two runners on in the top of the first inning. South Suburban College (37-15), meanwhile, followed an error and a single with a run-scoring double in their half to assume a 1-0 lead before starter Eli Hoyt fanned the next three batters to strand two.

A bases loaded fielder's choice and a two-RBI single in the third pushed the differential to 4-0. The WolfPack were never able to put two runners on in one inning from that point on, and went 1-2-3 in the seventh to complete the loss.

Gabe Roessler, Gunnar Doyle, Zach Storbakken, and Jake Fulton each produced a hit for the Pack, who were shutout for just the third time this season.

Hoyt, a product of Waukesha, Wisconsin, dropped to 4-1 with his first collegiate loss after going five innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out five. Jacob Arndt pitched one inning in relief and struck out one of the three batters he faced.
