#2 WolfPack take two from Elgin to close out 2022 regular season

18 second- and third-year players recognized on Sophomore Day

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College baseball team was able to end the 2022 regular season on a high note, winning both games of a Region 4 doubleheader against Elgin Community College at Robin Roberts Field on Sunday. The WolfPack, ranked #2 in the NJCAA Division II Poll, narrowly won the opener by a 2-1 margin before taking the finale with a 7-1 decision to reach 39-8 for the regular season. The wins give the Pack a 29-21 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans. Sunday's games also marked the final home games for 18 players that were recognized as part of a Sophomore Day ceremony. The list of players includes Jacob Arndt, Spencer Bartel, Charlie Campbell, Gunnar Doyle, Carson Fluno, Jake Fulton, Luke Hansel, Brady Jurgella, Eli Kramer, Riley LeTourneau, Dayne Louis, Adrian MontilvaJake Nelson, Gabe O'Brien, Eduardo Saucedo, Zach Storbakken, Jett Thielke, and Jacob Wilde.

Game #1: #2 Madison College 2, Elgin Community College 1

Madison College scored the only two runs it needed to win the opener in their first at-bats, and it all came with two outs. Gunnar Doyle got the rally started with a hit by pitch, and Zach Storbakken joined him on the bases with an infield single. Brady Jurgella then single to left to score Doyle, and a double off the bat of Cameron Dupont to right field was enough to get Storbakken across home.

Starter Jacob Wilde retired the first nine of the first ten batters he faced before a double and a two-out single up the middle put the Spartans on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. He worked into the seventh inning, and after inducing a fly out to the lead off hitter, was replaced by Riley LeTourneau for the final two batters and outs as the right-hander from Brookfield, Wisconsin, picked up his first save of the season.

Wilde (4-1) surrendered one earned run on five hits and a walk in his 6.1 innings. The left-hander from Waukesha, Wisconsin, struck out six for his fifth outing with at least a half-dozen K's.

Jurgella, a Menasha, Wisconsin, native, had two of the WolfPack's six hits and drove in a run. Dupont had a hit and a RBI, while Storbakken had a hit and a run scored.

Game #2: #2 Madison College 7, Elgin Community College 1

Both teams had scoring chances in the first inning of the game two, however, only one came through. After Elgin Community College left the bases loaded in the top half, the WolfPack jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Eli Kramer opened the bottom half with a tripe to left, and after Gabe Roessler walked, Gunnar Doyle lined a two-bagger to center that plated both. Doyle would later score on Jake Nelson's ground out.

In the third, Madison College filled the base paths on two singles and a walk. Jake Fulton grounded a ball through the right side with one out to score Nelson, and Jurgella was able to join him at home after an error on the right fielder. The Spartans lone run came via a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth, cutting the Pack's lead to 5-1. However, three consecutive singles to open the fifth generated another run, with Kramer picking up an RBI. And Eduardo Saucedo crossed home on a fielder's choice off the bat of Zach Storbakken to reach a six-run differential.

Three batters recorded multiple hits in helping the WolfPack reach 11 for the game. Kramer was 3 for 4 for his sixth three-hit game this season, and the former Hortonville HS athlete was one of seven different players to score a run. Fulton and Storbakken each had two hits, with the former registering two RBI and a run scored. Doyle also had two driven in and one run as part of a 1 for 3 game with a walk.

Luke Hansel (3-1) got the start and struck out a season-high six batters over five innings. The native of Caledonia, Wisconsin, allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks. Adrian Montilva and Chris Byhre each worked an inning and each recorded a strike out. Byhre gave up a hit and issued one walk.
