MADISON, WISC. - A return to their home turf at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field helped the Madison College softball team turn around a three-game losing streak with a pair of victories in a sweep of Region 4 opponent Carl Sandburg College on Saturday. The WolfPack opened the day with a run-ruled 10-2 decision in five innings before taking a 12-6 victory in the nightcap. The two W's push the team's win streak over the Chargers to 11 straight, and also give the Pack a 14-3 lead in the all-time series.
Game #1: Madison College 10, Carl Sandburg College 2 (5 innings)
The home team needed to rally from an early two-run deficit to claim the day's first win, as the Chargers plated two runs in the top of hte first against
Casey Fountain. The WolfPack went on top for good in the third inning with three runs on two hits, a walk, and a costly two-run error by the left fielder.
A four-run fourth put the game in the home team's control, starting with a run-scoring single by
Brianna Brandner.
Maddie Kvatek followed with ground ball single to left to bring in Brandner, and two batters later it was freshman rightfielder
Makenna Gish ripping a triple to center to score two more runs. Three more runs in the fifth ended the game early, with
Abbie Cavadini picking up a RBI-single and
Casey Fountain helping her own cause with a walk-off single on the infield that drove in
Briar Armatoski.
Fountain, Gish, and Brandner all had two hits for Madison College. Fountain added two runs scored and a RBI. Gish, a native of West Bend, Wisconsin, had a team-high two runs batted in and a run scored. Armatoski, an Amherst, Wisconsin, product, racked up a team-best three runs scored to match a career-high on a hit and a walk.
In the circle, Fountain last all five innings and struck out six batters. The former Poynette HS athlete was tagged for two runs on six hits and a walk as she improved to 7-2.
Game #2: Madison College 12, Carl Sandburg College 6
Game two saw Carl Sandburg College (12-17) again take an early lead with a run in the first inning, however, the WolfPack countered immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the first, highlighted by
Sophie Rivera's single up the middle that drove in
Maddie Kvatek and
Ellie Rademacher. Following a scoreless second inning, Madison College (18-10) jumped out to an 8-1 advantage with a five-run third inning. Kvatek tripled in
Chariell Butler, and two batters later Rivera struck again with her own triple to score Kvatek and Rademacher. The inning's third triple came off the bat of
Kiana Patterson to score
Bri Unger.
The Chargers trimmed the differential to 8-4 in the fifth and then 8-5 in the sixth before the Pack tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Butler and
Taylor VonBehren drove in
Bri Unger and
Claire Smedema, respectively, with consecutive singles. Butler later scored on a sacrifice fly from Kvatek, and Rivera capped her career-best day with another single through the middle to bring in VonBehren.
Rivera, who had not recorded more than one RBI in a game before, finished with a team-best five runs batted in as she matched a career-high with three hits. The Ixonia, Wisconsin, native, also scored a run. Butler, a product of La Crosse, Wisconsin, scored a career-high three runs and drove in another as part of a 1 for 3 effort with two walks.
Kvatek ended the game with three runs driven in and two scored as she went 1 for 2. Rademacher and Unger also scored two times.
Starter
Addison Warner (2-0) picked up her second win of the season with a three-inning performance that held the Chargers to one run on four hits and two walks. The native of Gilman, Wisconsin, did strike out three before giving way to
Mallory Sterling for the final four innings. Sterling fanned three and walked one, while allowing four earned run on four hits.
