MADISON, WISC. - Sunday's Region 4 softball doubleheader between Madison College and Black Hawk College experienced a wide array of emotions as the two teams split their twin bill at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack ran away with the opener, using a pair of three-run innings to take a 9-1 victory via run-rule, however, the Braves erased a 6-2 lead to grab a 9-6 come-from-behind win in the finale. The Pack had won 11 straight games over the Braves before the loss, and now lead the all-time series by an 11-1 count.
Game #1: Madison College 9, Black Hawk College 1 (6 innings)
Madison College broke a scoreless game with three runs in the third. Starting pitcher
Casey Fountain helped her own cause with a two-run single to left, and then scored when
Sophie Rivera singled her in. After the Braves scored their lone run in the fourth, the WolfPack added on three more in the home half as
Brianna Brandner drove in a run on a single up the middle and
Maddie Kvatek followed with a two-RBI line drive into left. An error produced another run in the fifth, and three walks loaded the bases in the sixth to set up an opportunity for an early run-rule victory. A fourth walk issued to
Briar Armatoski forced in one run, and a wild pitch in the next at bat ended the game as
Taylor VonBehren scored.
Kvatek, a native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was the lone player with multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a walk. She drove in two runs and scored another. Fountain also drove in a pair of runs and scored one as part of a 1 for 3 day. Brandner scored a team-high two runs and tallied a RBI and a hit. Rivera produced a hit, a run, and a run batted in.
Fountain (8-2) struck out seven batters over six innings of one-run ball that saw the Poynette, Wisconsin, native surrender six hits.
It's the team's 11th run-rule victory of the season.
Game #2: Black Hawk College 9, Madison College 6
Game two seemed headed in the same direction, with Madison College racking up a 6-2 lead through four innings. After
Grace Madeiros scored on
Maddie Kvatek's ground out in the third, the Pack used seven singles to generate five runs in the fourth.
Kiana Patterson,
Chariell Butler, and
Makenna Gish each had a run-scoring single, while Kvatek picked up another RBI with a sac fly.
Black Hawk College (14-17) began its come-from-behind effort with a two-run home run off Patterson in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game.
Addison Warner was brought in to start the seventh and close out the win, however, she allowed hits to all three batters she faced, which tied the score at 6-6.
Mallory Sterling was unable to stem the tied, giving up a double that plated the go-ahead run. The Braves tacked on two more for a five-run seventh that put the visitors ahead by three. Madison College went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.
Starter
Claire Smedema surrendered two unearned runs over her three innings, allowing six hits and striking out two. Patterson's three inning effort in relief also produced two runs on three hits and a walk, and saw the freshman strike out three. Warner (4-2) took the loss with three runs allowed on three hits without recording an out. Sterling's stat line finished with two unearned runs, two hits allowed, one walk issued, and two K's.
At the plate,
Myah Hennessey was the only player with multiple hits, as the Highland, Wisconsin, native was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Kvatek finished 0 for 4, but led the team with two RBI. Butler and Patterson each had a hit, a run scored, and one driven in, with Butler also stealing a pair of bases.
