Luster's 31 points lead WolfPack past Kishwaukee

Freshman's career-high snaps losing skid ahead of extended break

Box Score MADISON, WISC. - Freshman Deante Luster exploded Saturday afternoon inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, scoring a career-high 31 points to lead the Madison College men's basketball team to a 75-62 win over Region 4 opponent Kishwaukee College. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid, while extending the WolfPack's win streak over the Kougars to seven in a row. Kishwaukee still leads the all-time series by a 16-9 tally.

Luster, a native of Columbia, South Carolina, finished a highly efficient performance by making 12 of 16 shots from the field, including 3 of 5 from outside the three-point arc and adding four free throws. His big day also included career-highs  with five assists and five steals, while reeling in five rebounds and blocking one shot. The 31 points mark the second 30-point performance this season for the Pack, who saw sophomore Cortez Telfered pour in 32 points earlier this season against the University of Dubuque JV. Luster, who did not play in four of the first five games of the season, has tallied double-digit points in eight of his ten game's played and is averaging 14.5 points per game.

After trailing 8-0 out of the gates, Luster eventually hit a three-pointer more than six minutes into the game that ignited a 9-2 run and tied the score at 13-13 with a Peter Gustafson corner three. The score differential stayed within a single possession over the next ten-plus minutes as the teams went back-and-forth exchanging ties and leads. Luster's layup with 45 seconds left in the half pushed the lead to five before a Kishwaukee College (2-7) free throw made it 35-31 at the break.

Trailing by one after the Kougars opened the half with a 8-2 surge, Luster again came through with a long range bomb to regain the lead and start a ten-point run, of which the 6'3" guard/forward notched seven. The Kougars would not go away, however, and with 11:19 to play, used a dunk to take their first lead since the first half. A pair of free throws inside of nine minutes remaining gave Kishwaukee College a 56-55 advantage, before Luster converted another layup 90 seconds later to give the WolfPack the lead for good with an impressive 15-0 burst. The Madison College defense held the Kougars without a field goal for nearly the full final nine minutes in outscoring them 22-8.

Luster, who netted 18 of his 31 in the first half, was one of three players to reach double-figures. Sophomore Keith Hoffman added 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and a steal. Gustafson, a freshman from Monticello, Wisconsin, came off the bench to contribute ten points, five boards, and a career-high three blocks.

Telin Porter, a second year guard/forward from Houston, Texas, led the team with eight rebounds and scored five points.

Madison College forced 20 turnovers by the Kougars, and converted that into a 24-13 edge in points off turnovers, while also leading the points in the paint category by a 38-24 tally. The WolfPack finished 28 for 59 (47%) overall and made 6 of 20 (30%) attempts from beyond the arc. They were 13 for 21 (62%) at the free throw line.
