Madison College unable to slow down Iowa Central, Waubonsee in weekend losses

Sophomore Knox leads all scorers with 28 combined points

MADISON, WISC. & SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team continued its pursuit of the season's first win with a pair of games against NJCAA Division II opponents over the weekend, however, the WolfPack suffered losses in both. The Pack dropped an 82-65 contest to visiting Iowa Central Community College on Friday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, and then fell by a 90-60 count following a quick turnaround and a long drive to play Waubonsee Community College on Saturday afternoon.

Game #1: Iowa Central Community College 82, Madison College 65

In the first-ever meeting between the two program, the Tritons, who are receiving votes in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll, answered an early Madison College basket with an 11-0 run to take control early. Trailing 21-13 after the first quarter, Madison College eventually used an 11-0 surge of their own to get within six thanks to three pointers from Reyna Knox, Kaylee Anzalone, and Kayla Staveness. The WolfPack chipped away as the end of the half neared, and twice made it a one possession game before a basket and two free throws for ICCC made it 39-32 at the half. An 18-3 run to begin the second half for Iowa Central created a then game-high 22-point differential late in the third quarter. Madison College was unable to recover in taking the 17-point setback.

The Tritons dominated the paint with a 36-8 advantage in interior scoring, as well as a 14-9 edge in second chance scoring after finishing 12 rebounds better than the WolfPack. Madison College made 21 of 61 (34%) shots overall and was 8 of 23 (34%) outside the arc. They did convert 15 of 18 (83%) of their free throws.

Freshman Jordanna Davis led the Pack in scoring for the second consecutive game, posting 19 points on 6 of 13 shooting that included a 3 for 5 effort from long range. She also added four free throws. Davis, a La Crosse, Wisconsin, native, finished with six rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a blocked shot.

Second year guard Reyna Knox made her season debut and dropped in 17 points after also hitting a trio of three-pointers as part of a 6 for 14 game. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native was 2 for 2 at the charity stripe, dished out two assists, and grabbed one rebound.

Guards Kaylee Anzalone and Taylor Ripp tied for the team lead with four assists in the game, with Anzalone also securing a team-best three steals.

Game #2: Waubonsee Community College 90, Madison College 60

Less than 18 hours later - and two hours away - Madison College laced up their shoes for a Region 4 contest with the Chiefs, who were able to secure a third consecutive win in the head-to-head series. The WolfPack still leads by a 10-5 margin all time. The visiting Pack trailed nearly all of the first quarter, but was down just 16-12 heading into the second quarter. After Reyna Knox scored a layup to pull within a basket, WCC rattled off a 17-4 run to build a 15-point lead, and would eventually outscored Madison College by a 30-12 differential in the quarter to take a 46-24 halftime lead. The second half was more balanced as Madison College scored 36 points, however, they were unable to string enough stops together defensively to cut the deficit to less than 20.

Three players scored in double-figures, led by Mikala Williams' 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting with one three points and two free throws. The native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, added six rebounds and an assist to her statline.

Freshman Cora Hansen contributed a season-high 12 points, half of which came from the charity stripe. The La Crosse, Wisconsin, native also tallied four boards and three helpers. Knox rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points, three assists, one rebound, and a career-high five steals. Taylor Ripp led the team with eight rebounds.

Madison College finished with a season-high 34 turnovers, which led to a 39-17 advantage for the Chiefs in points off turnovers. Waubonsee Community College also turned 25 offensive rebounds into a 24-8 edge in second chance scoring, and also bested the Pack 44-22 in points in the paint. The WolfPack finished 18 of 61 (29%) from the field, 4 of 19 (21%) from three-point range, and 20 of 32 (62%) at the free throw line.
