WolfPack tally first win with defeat of Mesabi Range, fall at Waubonsee College

Madison College clamps down on Norse in impressive defensive showing

MADISON, WISC. & SUGAR GROVE, ILL. - The Madison College men's basketball team rallied in the second half of Friday's home game against Minnesota North College-Mesabi Range to pull out a 60-53 victory inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, giving the WolfPack and first year head coach Jason Roscoe their first win of the 2022-23 season. The Pack then followed with a quick turnaround Saturday and a trip to Waubonsee Community College, where the Chiefs defeated the Pack by a 97-74 final.

Game #1: Madison College 60, Minnesota North College-Mesabi Range 53

In the first-ever meeting with Mesabi Range, Madison College trailed for most of the opening 20 minutes, and faced a 30-20 deficit coming out of halftime. With the differential at 11 points with just over 15 minutes to play, the WolfPack emerged from a timeout and strung together eight consecutive points to pull within 37-34. As the clock moved under nine minutes remaining, the WolfPack pulled even at 42-42. Madison College put it all together for a finishing kick that saw the home team outscore the Norse 11-3 over the final 3:45 to secure the win.

Sophomore Keith Hoffman paced the Pack with 18 points on 7 of 14 shooting with two three pointers and a pair of free throws. He completed a second straight double-double with a season-high 13 rebounds.

Second year guard/forward Telin Porter added a season-high 13 points on a perfect 3 for 3 effort from the floor and a near-perfect 7 for 8 performance at the stripe. The Houston, Texas, native added a team-best three steals and grabbed two rebounds. 



Cortez Telfered, a sophomore guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, produced his first double-digit scoring effort this year with ten points, half of which came at the free throw line. He also added six rebounds, two assists, and a steal. 

Madison College shots 18 for 43 (42%) overall, made 4 of 10 (40%) from outside the arc, and 20 of 36 (55%) at the line. They limited the Norse to 32% shooting from the field and 9% (2-22) from long range. The WolfPack also had a 42-29 edge in total rebounds.

Game #2: Waubonsee Community College 97, Madison College 74

A two-hour bus trip and a less than 18-hour turnaround saw Madison College taking on Region 4 Division II foe Waubonsee Community College on Saturday. The first half was back-and-forth until the Chiefs broke a 30-30 tie and held on for a 42-37 halftime lead. After Cortez Telfered's jumper to start the second half cut the deficit to three, the WolfPack watched the differential grow from that point on. An 11-0 run helped build a 65-48 advantage for the home team, who eventually led by as much as 27.

Waubonsee Community College controlled the paint with a sizable 52-20 advantage in interior scoring, as well as an 18-11 edge in second chance points. The home team shot 55% (39-71) overall and were 10 of 25 (40%) outside the arc, whlie the WolfPack finished 27 of 64 (42%) on the day and made 10 of 24 (41%) from deep. They added a 10 for 14 effort at the free throw line, but were doubled up 36-18 in total rebounds.

Telfered led a quartet of players in double-figures for Madison College, scoring 19 points on 6 of 11 shooting and three 3-pointers. He added four free throws, a career-best five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

Sophomore Nik Feller also drained three triples en route to 15 points and three rebounds. Telin Porter added a dozen points and four boards, and Keith Hoffman pitched in with ten points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal, and one block.

Waubonsee CC ends the WolfPack's two-game win streak in the head-to-head series, which the Chiefs now lead 8-2.

Madison College (1-2) is back on the road for three more games this week, the first of which comes Wednesday, November 9 against NCAA Division III University of Dubuque JV. Tip off in Dubuque, Iowa, is at 7:30 p.m. The WolfPack won the only prior meeting between the two teams back in 2017-18.
