DUBUQUE, IOWA - Sophomore
Cortez Telfered carried the Madison College men's basketball team to an 80-71 double overtime win on the road Wednesday night against NCAA Division III University of Dubuque JV. His career-high 32 points and eight rebounds propelled the WolfPack in a game that saw tie scores a halftime, the end of regulation, and after the first overtime. Following six lead changes and a dozen ties, the Pack improved to 2-0 all-time against the Spartans.
The back-and-forth game featured a pair of five-point leads in the first half for Madison College. A Peter Gustafson three-pointer followed by a
Keith Hoffman dunk made it 16-11 less than nine minutes into the game, and
Nik Feller's triple as the clock moved inside of five minutes remaining made it 25-20. The Spartans answered with six of the last seven points in the half to make it 26-26 at the break.
A 12-2 run to the second half was bookended by a Hoffman three and a
Telin Porter layup to give the Pack the game's first double-digit advantage. Just over three minutes later, another 12-2 surge by the University of Dubuque tied the score at 40-40. Madison College responded with a 13-3 spurt to again take a ten-point lead with less the eight minutes to play in regulation. The lead remained at three after a pair of Telfered free throws with 14 seconds left, but a Spartans three in the final seconds sent the game to overtime.
After both teams scored six points in the first OT, Telfered took over. The guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, scored 13 of the team's 14 points in the second overtime. He converted 7 of 9 free throws in the final five minutes, and also added two rebounds and a steal to help close out the win.
Telfered's 32 points came on 10 of 20 shooting and included a 3 for 5 effort from long range. He finished 9 for 13 at the charity stripe en route to surpassing his previous career-high of 19, which he achieved Saturday at Waubonsee Community College.
Hoffman racked up 20 points, seven rebounds, and a team-leading four assists. The second year forward/center made two of his seven baskets from beyond the arc and hit four free throws..
Nik Feller also reached double figures in scoring with 12 points. Porter Pretasky and Deante Luster tied Telfered for the team lead with eight rebounds.
