Slow start dooms WolfPack in season-opening loss to McHenry

Freshman Davis leads quartet of players in double-figures

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team took a 79-60 loss to McHenry County College in their 2022-23 season opener on Tuesday inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. A rough opening quarter put the WolfPack in an early deficit they were unable to overcome, despite a 21-point effort by freshman Jordanna Davis in her collegiate debut. The Scots have won five straight season openers against the Pack, and now own a 5-2 lead in the all-time series.

With the score at 10-7 in favor of McHenry County College (1-0) more than four minutes in, the Scots finished the first quarter with a 13-2 run that saw the WolfPack shoot 1 for 8 and commit three turnovers. Madison College settled in during the second quarter, as Davis knocked down a dozen points to help the Pack match MCC with 16 points each and send the game to halftime with a 14-point differential. Despite playing a more competitive second half, Madison College was unable to close the deficit to single-digits.

Davis, a native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, went 6 for 12 overall with a pair of three-pointers and was perfect on all seven free throws en route to her 21 points. She added three rebounds and an assist.

Sophomore Mikala Williams, a transfer from Dominican University, added 11 points on 5 of 15 shooting. She nearly completed her first career double-double with nine rebounds and three assists.

Guards Kaylee Anzalone and Taylor Ripp each added ten points. Anzalone, a freshman, connected on a pair of three-pointers, while Ripp made three shots and four free throws. Ripp, a sophomore from Lodi, Wisconsin, also reeled in eight boards and snagged a team-high three steals.

Madison College finished 21 for 68 (30%) from the field, 4 of 16 (25%) from long range, and 14 for 27 (52%) at the free throw line. The home team did own a 40-31 advantage in rebounds, leading to a 16-9 edge in second chance points.

Tuesday's game also marked the first with coaches Mike Mayfield and James Adams leading the program.
