MADISON, WISC. - After opening the season with four straight losses, the Madison College women's basketball team has responded with four consecutive wins, the last of which came Tuesday in a resounding 74-41 victory over the Rockford University JV inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack reached their highest point total of the season, as well as their largest margin of victory. Three players scored in double-figures, and sophomore Mikala Williams recorded a unique double-double in the first-ever meeting with the Regents.
Following a very competitive and back-and-forth first ten minutes that concluded with Rockford University owning an 18-17 lead, the WolfPack engineered a 16-6 run in the second quarter and led by seven at the break. Madison College dominated the second half by a 39-13 margin, which included a 29-point third quarter that is their highest scoring quarter of the season. Seven different players scored during the third, which featured runs of 12 and seven points. They continued to grow the lead in the fourth quarter by limiting the Regents to just four points on 2 of 17 shooting and five turnovers.
Second year guard
Taylor Ripp was tops offensively with 17 points on 7 of 16 shooting with three free throws. The Lodi, Wisconsin, native added eight rebounds and a block.
Emma Paulson came off the bench to contribute a season-high 15 points and five rebounds. The freshman from Columbus, Wisconsin, drained a career-high three 3-pointers. Fellow first year guard Kayla Staveness made her first career start and tallied a season-best 14 points, four boards, two assists, and a steal.
Williams, a transfer from Dominican University, scored four points, but completed her first career double-double with career-highs of 13 rebounds and ten assists.
Madison College's 40.3% shooting effort (27-67) marks their best overall percentage of the season. The Pack knocked down six triples and 14 free throws in a game for the fourth time in November. The home team finished plus-nine in total rebounds, and owned a 42-24 edge in points in the paint. A season-low six turnovers helped the WolfPack to a 13-2 lead in points off turnovers
