MADISON, WISC. – The highest point total of the season came Tuesday night for the Madison College women's basketball team in a 67-56 win over visiting College of Lake County. The Region 4 contest inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium saw the WolfPack score 20 or more point in the first and fourth quarters, and finish with three players in double-figures to advance their current win streak to three games. The win gives the Pack a 7-3 lead in the head-to-head series against the Lancers.
Sophomore
Reyna Knox got the WolfPack started on the right foot, scoring nine points in the first quarter, including a layup and a three-pointer to start the game. Madison College tallied 20 points in the opening ten minutes and led by three after freshman Emma Paulson banked in a deep three-pointer to beat the buzzer. An 8-0 run early in the second quarter expanded the lead to nine points at 28-19 less than four minutes into the half, however, CLC chipped away and made it a 30-28 differential at the half.
Six straight points to open the third quarter gave the Pack a 36-28 advantage, but with just over four minutes to play in the quarter, the College of Lake County tied the score at 39-39. After Paulson answered with another triple, the Lancers closed the fourth quarter on a 9-3 surge and took a 48-45 lead into the final quarter. After trading baskets, leads, and ties for the first three-plus minutes, freshman Kayla Staveness completed an and-one to ignite Madison College on a 15-4 closing run to claim the win.
Taylor Ripp, a second year guard, scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter, and finished 6 of 11 from the field and 2 of 7 at the free throw line. She added six rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and an assist.
Knox was right behind with 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting with two 3-points and a free throw. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin, native also collected three boards and three steals.
Cora Hansen rounded out the double-digit scorers with ten points on three field goals and four free throws. The 5'10" forward from La Crosse, Wisconsin, reeled in a career-high eight rebounds and dished out two assists.
Madison College finished with a season-high 15 steals, giving them 12 or more thefts in each of their three straight wins. They connected on 26 of 73 shots (35%), 6 of 27 (22%) three-pointer, and just 9 of 20 (45%) free throws. The WolfPack held narrow advantages in points off turnovers (17-14), points in the paint (36-32), and second chance points (9-4) despite being slightly out-rebounded.
