Defensive effort keys win as Madison College holds off Lake County

Largest win differential of the season opens homestand that continues Thursday

MADISON, WISC. – Madison College's defense stepped up when it needed to most Tuesday night, finishing out a 77-58 win over the College of Lake County in a Region 4 men's basketball game inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. In a two-possession game with seven minutes to play, the WolfPack held the Lancers to just six more points on 2 of 15 shooting and forced three turnovers to secure their largest win differential of the young season. Four players reached double-figures as the Pack shot 50% from the field, 46% from long range, and 81% at the charity stripe.

With the game even at 9-9 after seven minutes, sophomore Telin Porter bookended an 11-0 run for the WolfPack with a pair of layups, the last of which was through contact and earned him an additional free throw to make it 20-9. The College of Lake County closed to within five with 7:10 to play in the half, however, the Pack took a 34-26 advantage into halftime.

The home team worked their lead to as high as 15 with 13 minutes remaining, leading 49-34 after 14-4 surge. The Lancers, though, did not quit, and trailed by just six at 58-52 after a bucket with 7:08 to play. That's when the WolfPack defense kicked in and helped produce a closing stretch in which the Pack outscored the competition by a 19-6 margin, with sophomore Nik Feller scoring ten consecutive points in that stretch.



Second year forward/center Keith Hoffman paced the Pack with 14 rebounds and nine rebounds. He converted 4 of 10 shots with one 3-pointer and a 5 for 6 effort at the free throw line.

Feller was a perfect 3 for 3 beyond the arc and 2 for 2 at the line, while missing just one of his five field goal attempts en route to 13 points.

Cortez Telfered and Deante Luster each added a dozen points, with the latter establishing a new career-high. Telfered tallied nine of his 12 points in the first half, and matched Porter with a season-best five assists. Porter also came up with a four steals.

The WolfPack gathered a 15 more rebounds than the Lancers, and also held a 23-13 advantage in points off turnovers.

The all-time series still belongs to CLC by a 6-2 margin.
