MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's volleyball team threw a block party Tuesday night inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium, using a season-high 16.0 blocks to sweep away visiting Harper College with a 3-0 win in North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 competition. Freshmen
MacKenzie Plunkett and
Gabby Hack combined for a dozen rejections of Hawks attacks, helping send the WolfPack to resounding wins of 25-13, 25-12, 25-17. The victory extends Madison College's current win streak to three matches, while also ending giving the Pack two wins in the last three meetings against Harper College, which had picked up victories in 11 of 13 meetings from 2015 to 2019.
Madison College wasted no time in flexing some muscle over the competition, racing out to an 11-3 lead. They eventually went up by 11 points at 17-6 before settling in for the 12-point win in set one.
The blocks starting piling up in set two, which consisted of six blocks total. Plunkett, a 6'1" middle blocker, registered back-to-back blocks to give the WolfPack a 6-3 edge, and Hack, a 5'11" middle blocker/outside hitter mirrored that effort with consecutive denials as part of a six-point run that pushed the score to 14-5. A pair of
Kendall Weisensel aces contributed to another run that saw the Pack go ahead by a 24-9 count.
Harper College put up their biggest fight at the start of the third set, grabbing an 8-4 lead and forcing a Madison College timeout. The WolfPack narrowed the gap to 8-7, and after trailing 11-9, rattled off an impressive 12 consecutive points to surge ahead 21-9. The run featured several block combinations by Hack, as well as two more aces for Weisensel. The Hawks did make the home team earn the win, clawing to within 23-17 before Madison College won the match.
Madison College had a match-best 13 kills in the opening set, hitting a .257 efficiency. They followed in the second set with 11 kills, one attack error, and a .435 attack percentage. The home team finished with 30 kills and a season-high hitting efficiency of .316.
Plunkett finished with seven blocks to match a career-best effort from three days prior for the McFarland, Wisconsin, native. She also finished with four kills and a .500 attack percentage.
Hack, a native of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, registered her third match with five blocks this fall. Offensively, she produced six kills and a .455 efficiency.
Freshman
Sophia Venne was tops on the team with seven kills, and hit at a .400 clip. The product of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, also contributed a pair of blocks to the party.
Tyra Anderson amassed six blocks and three aces.
Weisensel produced a team-high ten digs and career-high six aces, as well as four kills. Setter Daryn Schaeffer racked up 28 assists.
Harper College (9-19, 1-3) still leads the all-time series by a narrow 20-19 margin. The teams will play again in Palatine, Illinois, on October 20 in the regular season finale.
