#11 WolfPack get back on track with pair of sweeps at Morton Triangular

Madison College takes down Morton College, Illinois Valley is six total sets

CICERO, ILL. - The Madison College women's volleyball team seems to put their best foot forward when it comes to weekend tournament's, using a pair of 3-0 sweeps of Morton College and Illinois Valley Community College at the Morton College triangular to boost their weekend tournament record to 13-5 in 2022. The 11th-ranked WolfPack rebounded from a tough road loss on Thursday to defeat the host Panthers for the third time this season, winning 25-16, 22-18, 25-22, and capped the day with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 defeat of the Eagles.

Match #1: #11 Madison College 3, Morton College 0 (25-16, 22-18, 25-22)

Madison College put its best foot forward from the get-go against host Morton College, posting ten kills and a .212 attack percentage in the opening set. It was the only set with double-digit kills and an efficiency above .200. The WolfPack finished with 27 kills and hit at a .155 clip, while also producing nine aces and five blocks.

Setter Daryn Schaefer amassed her eighth double-double of the year with 22 assists and ten digs, leading the team in both categories. The sophomore from Mazomanie, Wisconsin, was also tops on the team with four aces, marking her third match with at least that many.

Four different WolfPack players had four or more kills in the match, led by freshmen Gabby Hack and Tyra Anderson. Hack, a middle blocker/outside hitter, reached her half dozen on just 13 total swings and hit a team-leading .385 percentage. Anderson, an outside hitter, needed 22 attempts and hit .227. She also served up a pair of aces. Kendall Weisensel added five kills, and Sophia Venne had four.

Katie Wagner, a defensive specialist/libero from Waterloo, Wisconsin, tracked down ten digs to match Schaefer, while freshman Angelica Mayor's nine digs set a new career-best.

Madison College is now 3-0 this season against Morton College (12-14), which accounts for the entire all-time series.

Match #2: #11 Madison College 3, Illinois Valley Community College 0 (25-15, 22-18, 25-19)

Madison College dominated most the day's second match, winning each set by an average margin of nearly eight points. They generated ten kills in each of the first two sets, and hit a match-best .233 attack percentage in the second set. The WolfPack also controlled the net defensively, racking up 12 blocks for their highest total in a three-set match.

Gabby Hack, a native of Lake Mills, Wisconsin, hammered nine kills on a team-leading .316 efficiency. She also tallied to aces and two blocks. Kendall Weisensel was next with seven kills, to go along with a team-leading three aces. Freshman Sophia Venne was second in hitting percentage at .308 on five kills.

Daryn Schaeffer accounted for all 28 assists. Katie Wagner keyed the back row effort with with 13 digs. 

The win gives the WolfPack a narrow 9-8 edge over Illinois Valley Community College (2-17) in the head-to-head series, which includes wins for the Pack in nine of the last ten meetings.

Madison College (17-8, 1-2) continues its weekly trend of playing home matches on Tuesday night's with an October 4 showdown against Harper College inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The teams split their matches in 2021, however, the Hawks have won 13 of the last 16 meetings en route to a 20-18 lead in the all-time series.
