MADISON, WISC. - Two goals in a matter of 28 seconds turned Saturday's men's soccer match against Elgin Community College from a tight struggle into a sure-thing as Madison College eaned a 4-0 victory at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Freshman
Gabe Voung produced five points on two goals and an assist to propel the WolfPack to their fourth consecutive win, which also gives the Pack a 5-2 mark in the head-to-head series with the Spartans.
Madison College seized control of the match early, rattling off five shots in the first ten minutes. Unfortunately, the score remained 0-0 until the 23' when sophomore
Evan Thom set up Voung for his first goal of the match. Thom flipped a loose ball near midfield in the direction of the Spartans goal, and a poor header by an Elgin Community College (3-5-1) defender gave Voung an opportunity to loft a light shot over the charging goalkeeper and into the net.
It was still a one-goal differential into the second half when the match turned with two quick kicks of the soccer ball in the 54' and 55'. A long pass down the middle of the field found it's way to Voung, who shoveled it off to an attacking
Dominick Ramirez. The first year midfielder then made a nifty move to juke a defender and kicked back against the grain to beat the 'keeper for his eighth goal of the season. Less than 30 seconds later, the WolfPack pressured the Spartans defense and forced a turnover as
Jacob Howard intercepted a pass and immediately passed ahead to Voung. The Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, native spun through two defenders and went low to make it a 3-0 lead.
The match's final goal came in the final two minutes as
Richie Lima's pass found sophomore
Caeben Schomber, and the midfielder buried his seventh scoring strike of the season.
Voung boasts five matches with two more more goals and ranks second in the nation with 15 goals and 34 total points. He finished the match with two goals on three total shots. Ramirez also had three total shots, while Schomber and
Adair Tlato each fired off two total shots. Madison College racked up an 18-8 edge in total shots and a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.
First year goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey was credited with five saves and third career clean sheet over a full 90 minutes. The former DeForest Area HS athlete also ranks nationally, as he is seventh with an .857 save percentage and 12th with a 1.07 goals against average.
