PALATINE, ILL. - It had been 15 years since the Madison College men's soccer team reached a district tournament, and much like the 2007 season, the WolfPack saw their pursuit of the program's first national tournament appearance end at the hands of Dallas-Richland College. The four-time defending national champions and
#1-ranked Thunderducks blanked the Pack 4-0 in a NJCAA Division III Midwest District Tournament Semifinal on Friday. The setback ends Madison College's season with a 12-5 record overall.
Despite facing shot-after-shot for the first 30-plus minutes of the match, Madison College goalkeeper
Phil McCloskey and the defense kept Dallas-Richland out of the net in a scoreless struggle.
Gabe Voung, a freshman forward, did fire off one shot for the Pack, but missed wide left in the 14'.
The match turned in the 34' when Dallas-Richland finally broke through on their eighth shot on goal, as they buried a rebound off a McCloskey save to take a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Thunderducks turned a corner kick into a second goal.
By the time the first half ended, the 11-time national champs had added goals in the 42' and 44' to take a commanding 4-0 advantage into the locker room.
The second half saw the Pack generate four corner kicks and a 71' shot by freshman
Tomas Garcia that sailed over the crossbar. Madison College did its part defensively the rest of the match, limiting the Thunderducks to four shots on goal over the final 45 minutes.
The match finished with a 19-2 differential in total shots and a 17-0 margin in shots on goal. McCloskey, a native of DeForest, Wisconsin, recorded 13 saves, and finishes the season with 101.
Region 5 champion Dallas-Richland (12-0-1) advances to the district title match against host Harper College, who defeated Region 13 winner Anoka-Ramsey Community College. The winner earns an automatic bid into the 2022 NJCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.
The WolfPack has lost all six district tournament meetings with Dallas-Richland.
In two seasons under coach
Tim Bruner, Madison College has posted double-digit wins in back-to-back years.
