Late surge pushes DuPage past WolfPack in final minute

Hoffman nets double-double in first N4C road game

GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - Tuesday night's North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 tilt between Madison College and the College of DuPage came down to the final minutes, which saw the home team score six of the game's final seven points and steal a 63-61 victory. Three players scored in double-figures for the WolfPack, including freshman Keith Hoffman with his seventh double-double of the season, however, a late technical foul on the 'Pack led to the Chaparrals earning a third straight win in the all-time series that now sits at 15-13 in favor of Madison College.

In a game that saw Madison College twice lead by seven points, the two teams also went through seven lead changes and three ties. The differential remained within two possessions for most of the first half. Trailing by two, sophomore Trevon Liggins drained a three-pointer with eight minutes to play in the half, triggering a 10-2 run. Second year guard/forward Malcolm Reed knocked down an interior shot in the final minute to give the 'Pack a 37-30 edge before COD converted a free throw right before the half. After going up by seven with a Hoffman free throw to start the second half, the Madison College lead began to evaporate courtesy of a 11-3 burst by the College of DuPage (5-10, 1-1) out of the locker room. The teams traded baskets and leads over the next ten minutes until another Liggins bucket put the 'Pack ahead 60-57 with 1:40 remaining. DuPage Drew Gaston then scored four straight to put the home team on top heading into the final seconds. Madison College threw a baseball pass to Reed, who was fouled near the basket with 1.5 seconds to play. A technical foul against the WolfPack bench gave the Chaps two free throws, which Gaston made for a 63-60 lead. Reed then made his first free throw and purposely missed the second, however, time ran out trying to get the rebound for a potential game-winning shot.

Hoffman posted 15 points and 14 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double, and also added three blocked shots. Liggins, a 6'4" guard/forward from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, matched Hoffman with 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting, and also added five boards. Reed finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and a team-high five assists. The former Barneveld HS athlete was 4 of 8 overall and 4 of 9 at the free throw line.

Madison College secured a 44-30 advantage in total rebounds and an 8-5 edge in second chance scoring.

The two teams are slated to play again in Madison on February 10 for the final home game of the regular season and Sophomore Night.
