GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer methodically defeated the College of DuPage by a 2-1 final in a Region 4 match Wednesday. The match marked the first since 2011 between the two programs, and the result narrowed the Chaparrals all-time lead to 2-1-1.
The only goal scored in the opening half came off the foot of Madison College sophomore
Lucas Martin-Heid, who converted an
Erick Antimo pass in the 19' to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Martin-Heid, a forward from Oakland, California, has scored all three of his goals this season in the last five matches.
It was still a one-goal differential in the second half when the WolfPack padded their lead in the 59' with what proved to be the game-winning goal off the foot of
Matthew Ruggiero. The former Madison West HS athlete used a helper from fellow sophomore
Jonas Luskey Sanders en route to his fourth scoring strike, three of which have come in the last four matches.
The College of DuPage (4-3) kept the match close down the stretch with a 68' goal that was unassisted. Over the final 20-plus minutes, the WolfPack limited the opposition to three total shots, and sophomore 'keeper
Sullivan Schwitters saved one of them, while the others missed high and wide. Schwitters finished the day with five saves, while the position players in front of him contributed to a 23-14 lead in total shots and a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
