MADISON, WISC. - The
sixth-ranked Madison College men's soccer team put it all together Saturday in a resounding 6-0 defeat of Joliet Junior College in a North Central Community College Conference match at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East. Sophomore
Jonas Luskey Sanders recorded his second hat trick in three matches, while goalkeepers
Sebastian Varela and
Sullivan Schwitters combined for the team's first shutout of the season. The win gives the WolfPack the regular season sweep against the Wolves and extends their current head-to-head win streak to ten straight. The all-time series now stands at 14-12-4 in favor of Madison College.
Some fans were likely still finding their seats when Madison College put the first tally on the scoreboard with freshmen
Isaak Cordova taking a pass from
Erick Antimo less than two-and-half minutes after the opening kick. Cordova, a forward from DeKalb, Illinois, boasts six goals. The lead went to 2-0 in the 15' as sophomores
Matthew Ruggiero and
Lucas Martin-Heid combined to beat the Joliet Junior College (1-5, 1-4) goalkeeper with Ruggiero's fourth scoring strike of the fall.
Still a close match heading into the second half when the WolfPack exploded for four goals, three of which came off the foot of Luskey Sanders. The former Madison East HS athlete registered his goal in the 49' with an assist from Cordova. After Antimo netted an unassisted goal three minutes later for his sixth of the year, Luskey Sanders followed suit with a 62' scoring strike. The midfielder/forward capped his day with the hat trick goal in the final 20 seconds to make it seven goals in the last four matches after scoring two goals in the season's first four outings. Luskey Sanders leads the team with nine goals to place him in the top ten in the nation.
Madison College controlled the soccer ball throughout much of the match, and the defense turned away nearly every potential JJC attack. The WolfPack owned a 14-5 lead in total shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Varela and Sullivan shared the season's first clean sheet, with Schwitters picking up the only save of the match.
