MADISON, WISC. - In a matchup of the North Central Community College Conference co-champions from the altered 2020 season, the Madison College women's soccer team pulled away from Rock Valley College in a confident 4-1 victory Wednesday at
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch - East. The WolfPack, who are receiving votes in the latest
NJCAA Division III Poll, tallied four straight goals after falling behind 1-0 to earn a win in the 2021 league opener for both teams. Madison College narrowed the differential in the all-time series with the win, as RVC now leads by an 8-7-1 margin.
The visiting Golden Eagles (0-4, 0-1) were first on the scoreboard with a goal in the 17' that got past starting goalkeeper
Marin Stauffacher. At that point in the match, Madison College owned a 4-1 lead in shots on goal, and their assault on the RVC net never wavered.
With little more than ten minutes left in the half, the WolfPack netted both the equalizer and the game-winning scoring strikes in a matter of four minutes. Sophomore defender
Monica Tapia-Gutierrez converted an
Elizabeth Foye pass to pull even at 1-1. It was the first goal of the season for the Madison, Wisconsin, native and the second of her career. That goal in the 35' was followed by the go-ahead goal off the foot of second year forward/midfielder
Angelina Perez. The returning All-American used an assist from Tapia-Gutierrez to beat the RVC 'keeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the year. The helper was a team-best fifth on the season for Tapia-Gutierrez.
The second half saw Madison College continue to distance themselves with nine more total shots, including two that went in. Freshman
Alexis Kulow netted a goal in the 53' on an assist from
Karmen Smyth to give the native of DeForest, Wisconsin, her third goal this fall. Freshmen
Taylor Peterson and
Ashley Belk combined in the 80' to cap the scoring at 4-1. Peterson, a former Lodi HS athlete, now has two goals, while Belk racked up her first career assist.
Stauffacher, a Columbus, Wisconsin, product, turned away two of the three shots on goal by RVC. The 'Pack generated an 18-4 edge in total shots and a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Madison College (3-1-1, 1-0) will play its first road N4C match on Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to play Harper College (1-0, 0-0). The WolfPack is 8-4-1 all-time against the Hawks and have won six of the last seven meetings. Kickoff in Palatine, Illinios, is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
