Gray leads WolfPack to third place at Texas Roadhouse Madison College Invitational

Sophomore finishes second with pair of 73's at Cherokee CC

MADISON, WISC. - With perfect weather and playing conditions, as well as home course advantage at Cherokee Country Club, the Madison College golf team played to a third place finish at the two-day Texas Roadhouse Madison College Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Sophomore AJ Gray ended the weekend second on the leaderboard to highlight the individual performances.

The WolfPack led the opening round for the first 15 holes before dropping back to third place with a 319, five shots back of Black Hawk College. The home team improved by eight strokes for a 311 team total in round two - the second best 18-hole team score of the fall season - and used a 630 final tally to place third overall. Black Hawk College remained atop the leaderboard at 618, followed by Bryant & Stratton College with a 621. College of DuPage was fourth at 653, followed by Southwest Tech with a 696. 

Gray, a native of Janesville, Wisconsin, played steady golf throughout with six birdies and 23 pars to post consecutive rounds of one-over 73, both marking his second best rounds of collegiate golf. The 146 two-day total ties for the sixth best 36-hole score in program history and sat two back of medalist Luke Lofgren from Black Hawk College with a 144.

Freshman Ryan Rebholz earned the 'Pack's next best finish with 161 that placed him in a tie for 12th among all two-day golfers. The Verona, Wisconsin, native posted a 12-over-par 84 on day one, but followed with his first sub-80 round of the season, using an even-par 36 on the back nine for a 77 (+5). 

Four members of the team finished within three shots of each other. First year Kaleb Lycke went 84-81 for a 165 (+21) to place tied for 16th. Right behind in a tie for 19th were Ben Busick and Matt Paulson, The duo each shot a 167 (+23), with the former signing off on rounds of 79-88 and the latter carding a more consistent 83-84. Sophomore Ryen Ryba was all along in 21st thanks to an eight shot improvement following an opening 88. The Mequon, Wisconsin, native's final round 80 featured one birdie and nine pars to reach 168 (+24). Rounding out the Madison College scores was freshman Tyler Dahl, who had missed the previous two tournaments after earning a top-ten finish at the Highland "36". Dahl placed 27th with a 180 (+36) and had rounds of 88 and 92.

Madison College heads north for the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Sunday and Monday, September 19 and 20. The 36-hole tournament will be played exclusively at Eau Claire Golf & Country Club in Altoona, Wisconsin. Sunday's round begins at 1:00 p.m., while Monday's final round gets underway at 9:00 a.m.
