MADISON, WISC. - The 2021 season and home opener did not go as planned for the Madison College men's soccer team, falling 6-0 to visiting Triton College at the
Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East on Saturday. The setback marks the first in a season-opening match since 2018, and came in the debut of new head coach
Tim Bruner.
The visiting Trojans didn't waste time grabbing an early lead with two goals in the game's first 15 minutes. The day's first goal got by sophomore goalkeeper
Sullivan Schwitters in the 7', and five minutes later came the second successful kick to make it 2-0. Schwitters and the WolfPack held steady the rest of the first half and withstood several more attacks on the net.Â
The second half remained a stalemate through the first 20 minutes until Triton College (1-0) tallied their third goal, this time beating second year 'keeper
Sebastian Varela. The game really broke open with a pair of converted penalty kicks after fouls against Madison College in the 69' and 80'. The Trojans capped the scoring with another 80' goal.
Triton College produced a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 10-1 differential in shots on goal. Freshman forward
Erick Antimo, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, was the lone Madison College player to put a shot on goal, which came in the 87'.Â
Varela recorded four saves in the second half, while Schwitters did not register a save in his 45 minutes.Â
Madison College has lost three straight to the Trojans and trails the all-time series 22-7-1 against their former North Central Community College Conference opponent.
