LA CROSSE, WISC. - A back-and-forth match between long-time foes came down to the final few points Tuesday when the Madison College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 thriller at Western Technical College. The WolfPack opened with a 25-22 win in the opening set, however, the Cavaliers responded with back-to-back 25-22 and 25-22 wins. With their backs against the wall, Madison College fought back in set four with a 25-21 decision that forced a decisive fifth set. The dramatic final set finished with the home team earning a 15-11 victory.
A trio of front row players racked up double-digit kills in the match, led by second year outside hitter
Abigail Lewis. The Stoughton, Wisconsin, native blasted a career-best 22 kills.
Jadyn Holman and
Calla Borchert followed with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Borchert, a middle blocker from Lake Mills, Wisconsin, hit at a season- and team-high .571 percentage and also registered her first double-double of the year with 20 digs.Â
Setter
Mariah Best ran the offense to the tune of 37 assists, while also collecting ten digs her first career double-double. The WolfPack also racked up a season-best 11 service aces, with freshman
Abby Steinhauer producing a team-high four.Â
Steinhauer, a defensive specialist from Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, led the defensive charge with a career-high 30 digs.
Aubrie Kappes added 18 digs. At the net, the WolfPack added 7.5 blocks, with three different players posting 1.5 blocks.
Despite the setback, Madison College still leads the all-time series by a 57-40-9 count.

Madison College (1-4) is off for two weeks before returning to begin their North Central Community College Conference schedule with a match at the College of DuPage (3-3) on Tuesday, September 7. The WolfPack boast a 29-8 all-time record against the Chaparrals, but have dropped two of the last three meetings. First serve in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is set for 6:00 p.m.
