MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College softball team extended their current win streak to seven straight with a pair of wins over visiting Bay College (MI) on Saturday at
Robert D. Goodman Softball Field. The WolfPack pounced early with a 13-0 win in five innings to start the day, and finished with a 7-2 victory in the finale. The 'Pack has defeated the Norse four times this season after also earning two wins in March at the Hodag Dome in Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
Game #1: Madison College 13, Bay College 0 (5 innings)
Sophomore
Mallory Sterling struck out two-thirds of the batters she faced to lead the WolfPack to a run-ruled win. A career-high 12 strikeouts for the Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, native, along with just one hit allowed in the third inning, propelled Sterling to her seventh win of the season.
Sterling struck out the side in the first despite issuing her only two walks of the game, and the Madison College offense took over from there. Five first inning hits yielded five runs, highlighted by
Megan Miklesh's two-run double that came two batters after
Maddie Kvatek singled home the game's first run.
Katherine Brandl and
Kylle Hraban added run-producing hits to make it 5-0.
After
Abby Luczak drove in another run to start a six-run rally in the second, Miklesh struck again with two more RBI on a home run to left, her fourth of the season. Hraban,
Abbie Cavadini, and
Katie Joten also registered a RBI in the innings, which featured three consecutive extra base hits. The score remained 11-0 until the fourth inning when Luczak picked up another two runs batted in with a single through the left side that allowed Cavadini and
Grace Madeiros to touch home.
Four players accounted for ten of the 16 hits for the WolfPack, led by three-hit efforts from Luczak and Brandl. Luczak, a product of Rosendale, Wisconsin, generated three RBI and two runs scored, while Brandl scored twice and batted in another. Miklesh registered a team-high four runs batted in and score two more with her two hits. Hraban also had two hits and two runs scored, to go along with a run driven in.
Game #2: Madison College 7, Bay College 2 (7 innings)
Bay College (15-23) was able to score two runs in the first inning of game two to avoid another shutout, however, Madison College (32-5) was up to the challenge. Two hits and an error in the bottom half of the inning produced two run to even the score as
Mia Noelker and
Taylor VonBehren each drove in a run. Neither team was able to score over the next two-and-a-half innings until the 'Pack took the lead for good in the fourth on a
Grace Madeiros RBI single that scored
Paige Peloquin.
Maddie Kvatek opened the fifth with a triple, and scored when Noelker followed with a single through the left side. Three straight hits in the sixth capped the scoring at 7-2, highlighted by a two-run double for Kvatek.
The Madison College two through four hitters combined to go 7 for 11 with five RBI and four runs. Two of the three hits in the game for Kvatek went for extra bases as the former SPASH athlete went 3 for 4 with two runs batted in and two scored. Brandl posted two hits, two runs, and a RBI. Noelker picked up two runs batted in on her two hits.
Freshman
Lauren Steien twirled all seven innings of the game to improve to 8-2 on the year. The native of Taylor, Wisconsin, was tagged for two earned runs on four hits and a walk, while matching a career-high with five strikeouts.
