ELGIN, ILL. - The Madison College men's soccer poured in a season-high seven goals - their most since October 2018 - in a losing effort Thursday against Elgin Community College. The season finale was rescheduled from the previous weekend and saw the Spartans take an 8-7 victory despite a career-best four-goal performance from sophomore
Samuka Toure.
The Region 4 opponents traded goals throughout the match's first 48 minutes, with Elgin Community College (3-4) owning a 4-3 lead at halftime. After the Spartans tallied the first goal in the 13', Madison College countered with a goal two minutes later from sophomore
Jonas Luskey Sanders. Following a second ECC score in the 17', Toure began his impressive day with a goal in the 27'. Two minutes later the Spartans went ahead 3-2, which lasted just three minutes after
Matthew Ruggiero struck a successful kick at the 32' mark. Another Spartans goal right before the end of the half provided the home team with a 4-3 lead.
The second half was just two minutes old when Toure banged home his second goal of the day, which was immediately followed by back-to-back Elgin goals. Trailing 6-4, the WolfPack pulled even as Luskey Sanders found the back of the net for the second time in the 52', and Toure hit the equalizer in the 60' for his first career hat trick. The game would be decided over the next dozen minutes when Elgin netted goals in the 63' and 70' to regain the two-goal advantage. Toure cut the deficit in half in the 72' to make it 8-7, however, the were unable to generate any other scores before time ran out.Â
Toure, a Brooklyn, New York, native, tied for second in program history for most goals scored in a game. The former Madison East HS athlete pushed his season total to eight and his career tally to 13. Luskey Sanders has posted back-to-back two-goal games. The native of Madison, Wisconsin, has five scoring strikes this spring and seven for his career.
Madison College (2-5-1) out-shot the Spartans by a 32 to 18 margin. Goalkeeper
Sebastian Varela recorded eight saves.
Despite the loss, the WolfPack still own a 3-2 lead in the all-time series.Â
